Intel Ships Third-Generation Core (Ivy Bridge) Processors

"Today is the launch date for Intel's new "Ivy Bridge" CPUs, officially known as the company's "third-generation Core" processors. Essentially a die shrink of the current "Sandy Bridge," 32-nm second-generation Core chips, Ivy Bridge represents the first implementation of Intel's 22nm manufacturing process. This means that the newer processors will perform as well or better than today's models, with lower power requirements and better cooling."

Interesting.....
but has anything changed???
If you want a cheap desktop machine that COMPUTES faster than anything....Go Intel.
If you want a cheap desktop machine that COMPUTES not nearly as fast....but has much better onboard graphics....and is a tad cheaper....Go AMD
and I argue that the general consumer....Joe Sazbo off the streets----won't see any difference in general computing performance between the two unless he is doing high level tasks like rendering.
But he WILL see a difference in graphics performance.
So I think the general "balance of power" remains the same.....
The key for both these two CPU giants will be their ability to translate their CPUs into the mobile world lest they let nVidia and Samsung steal the show.
And it appears that Intel is clearly aware of this as they continue to shrink power requirements and die. Targeted at "Ultrabooks" which look amazingly like Apple Macbook Air models....LOL
They HAVE to be looking at the tablet and smartphone market with some concern/envy.
The server market will only be so big....
and the PC market is shrinking.....
Could Intel and AMD be the next Microsoft???
Tied to an old paradighm that is slowly dying.....
Jeesh.....who woulda thunk it????

Microsoft will be around far longer than AMD.
And for that matter so will IBM.

Agreed.....
Unless they do something dramatic.....
If they were to sign an exclusive agreement with Apple to produce the next generation of iPhone/iPad processors for instance.....

Maybe Intel and AMD will merge. If you can't beat them join them.

I don't think Intel will ever die, they are too innovative. Intel could disband their whole CPU business (80% of the company probably) and could still survive on other technology. If you were an Intel hater I would get use to them lol, they will be around the rest of most peoples lifetimes.
