Google Refines Search in Latest Tweak

October 4, 2009 by ctal

Search options in Google are getting yet another refinement aimed at providing users with results more finely attuned to their needs.

The No. 1 search player now offers nine more Search Options filters — including date ranges and options for more or fewer e-commerce sites. Search Options are found in the "show options" link, in the lightly shaded blue bar above the search results.

Nice though I doubt it will get Google back to where it once was.
Years ago what you were searching for was found easily.
Now the first few results are from sites that pay Google money and usually have nothing to do with what your looking for. I'm not talking about the first few advertising hits at the top as they were always there. I mean the main results just plan suck nuts. I'm using Bing more and more.

Googles results are not always bad but when they are and it happens quit often I get much better results from Bing or Yahoo. I tried to find a search that proves my point but I can't seem to hit on one at this time. From memory I have the most problems with google when I'm searching for a fix or info on a computer or some other device or hardware. The top results will be a mix of other search engine results, websites that want to sell me the answer and results that have nothing to do with what I was searching for. Several of my computer savvy friends claim to have the same problems with Google.

Bing seems to be getting better and better. I still use Google out of habit but that may change. I do not know if anyone was around when AltVista search engine was the best, must be 10 years or more ago. They had the best engine ever until they f'd it up. They had the best set of filters I have ever seen. Example : Say you did a search for dog, once done under filters the most common main topic results would show up and you could set each one to "include" or exclude" or "no filter. So dog search result filters might be "big dogs" "Labs" "color" you get the idea. You could dig down to exactly what you want and not loose what you may have if you were more specific to begin with. God I miss the good old AltaVista.

I'm no MS fanboy but they are doing some cool things with Bing check it out.
