Shock Australian election result: deadlock and hung parliament

We've just had an election here and the result is a hung parliament, which hasn't happened since 1940.

This means we enter a period of instability and weak government. Over the next couple of weeks there will be counts, recounts and negotiations between the parties and independants as they scramble to try and form a cohesive but minority government.

Stories here (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/)and here (http://www.abc.net.au/news/)

This is democracy at work and the people have spoken... although its not clear what the full impacts are.

If you're wondering how this happened here; recently the government sacked the leader (PM Kevin Rudd) who was very popular with the people. They sacked him (by party vote) because he wasnt very consultative with the party leadership group - or something, its not clear what the internal politics exactly were.
They then elected a woman to the leadership who became the first woman PM (although the fact that she's a woman is kinda beside the point).

But the loss of popular Kevin Rudd was not welcomed by the Australian people and this election has been our chance to make it clear how we feel about it. There have also been some big issues around policy that were contentious.

Truly an amazing time in Australian politics here... for all I know we could be back at the polls in a few short months!

Let's see if this thread floats.

Describe a pet peeve. No political peeves, please; we all know they only lead to arguments.

My first peeve: 12AM and 12PM
Idiots and idiot restaurants use these terms. Literally, they both mean midnight, but many folks have never applied their brains to it.

The proper terms are noon and midnight.
