9800 died, X800? or 6800?

my 9800Pro 128mb card died yesterday, that sucks, so i dont know wheather to buy an X800 Pro or a 6800. The cards i have in mind are the Asus X800Pro or the asus A9999GE (base 6800) i also have the Sapphire X800 availible. The issue i have is that i want to buy a third party card, as i have had all real ATI boards, and i wanna try something different. Can you unlock all 16 Pipes? if not then is the performance that much lower?

And ideas are welcomed.

John Ford

Availible cards from the stores i will buy:
  • Asus® Radeon™ AX800Pro/TD w/256Mb DDR & 8X AGP Retail Box -
  • ATI® Radeon™ X800Pro 256Mb DDR AGP DVI (Retail Box)
  • Sapphire® Radeon™ X800Pro 256Mb GDDR3 AGP TV-DVI (Retail Box)
  • Asus® v9999/GE GeForce™ - 6800 w/256Mb DDR3 & 8X AGP Retail Box

They are for all intensive purposes the same price, except the sapphire is $60 cheaper, but i am not really into sapphire

My personal opinion is to go with the 6800 GT. But either card is a good choice. They are both exceptional, and you shouldn't be dissapointed with any choice you make. If you are interested in a X800 Pro, may I suggest the HiS IceQ II X800 Pro? It's a little more expensive then the regular X800's but it's cooling design is very nice and I think worth the extra money.

Here's a link: http://www.hisdigital.com/html/x800pro_iceqii.htm

If you had bought a ATI retail then you have a 3 year warranty.

If you want to unlock the extra pipes ,you need a X800 VIVO card.

well, i put an aftermarket hs and ram coolers, so it doesnt have a warranty. plus, this way i get an upgrade. about the x800pro vivo, why is the crack only for the vivo ones??? and does Asus make a VIVO one?

There are no 6800GT's (unless GT=Ultra, i havent ever had NV) and the HIS has the same basic HSF that i believe brock my 9800Pro, so i am not getting it. I think i wanna go with the Asus, but i would prefer 4 free pipes. Who makes a decent VIVO card availible in Canada

Sapphire makes a VIVO X800 Pro, and Asus's X800XT also has VIVO. I don't know about the pro model though.

well i broke down and bought a BFG 6800GT OC from my other local (normal one refused to order one) and it is coming sometime this week (i hope) this is the first time i have bought hardware straight off the press and i hope it lives to the expectations, well after a 4MB ATI All in wonder anything is good

I didnt get the X800Pro because for the money (GF was 100$ less) it performed worse, so i am gonna treat myself to some speakers
