9800 pro and doom 3 any good?

With all these problems with the 9800xt and doom3 is there anyone out with a 9800 pro having problems with the game? Reason I ask is because I was recently offered a 9800 pro 256mb built by ATI for $100. Currently I have a 9600xt which I ran doom3 at high quality 1024x768 with no slowdown what so ever nor any hiccups.

THough I don;t know about the problem with the 9800xt, I have a 9800 Pro 128 and it runs great. I have not encountered any problems with slowdown or skipping but I run and similar setting as you do.

I had to clock my card down to stock speeds(I had it clocked up to XT levels)in order to avoid the "red dot" syndrome. For $100 the card is a bargain but I think milage varies with each card and system on how well it plays DOOM III. Let's face it-Carmack has done it again-he has really stressed the current hardware with the possible exception of the latest most expensive video cards.

Playing pretty decently at 1024x768 at "high" qual settings. ATI AIW 9800 Pro @ stock speeds. I get about 40fps on timedemo with the general tweaks that's been going around. Otherwise, I get ~35fps. Playing on a 22" CRT @ 75 MHz... eyes may feel a bit strained a little... since it's not as smooth as if you played at 800x600 @ high qual. However, this is just my feeling.

I get slight pauses so far only when I open doors that have monsters that are about to pop out. Kinda interesting because it's kinda like an early warning mechanism. hahahahaha.... so it kinda takes away from those rather cheap scare tactics. In multi monster battles... I don't sense much of any jerkiness.

But, so far just started.. heading out to find bravo team... I'm not sure if there will be more straining of my gfx card later on.

with com_showfps =1 I see for normal walking around corridors.. FPS's are around 50-60 fps... but in rooms where there is alot of visual effects, like infirmery, fps will drop to about low 20 fps.

game is definitely playable...

BTW.. using ATI cat. 4.7 as well
