G-Force 6800 Ultra

Hi.

I have just bought a new motherboard and a new graphic card. ABIT AI7 and G-Force 6800 Ultra (256).

This makes my computer look like this:

Motherboard: ABIT AI7 intel chipset 856pe
CPU: 2.8 Ghz intel P4 northwood(533 fsb)
RAM: 1024 mb DDR 3200
Graphic card: G-Force 6800 Ultra
Sound card: Audigy 2
Hdd: Seagate 120 gb

But the problem is, with these new things in my com, i freezes in games. For instance when I play W3 over battle.net, my screen suddenly shows wierd colors and then I can do nothing. Can't TAB out, can't enter taskmanager, can't do nothing at al, expect reboot.

I have downloaded the latest driver from nvidia, and the newest BIOS driver for my ABIT, and furthermore the chipset on the ABIT. What can be the problem. It's ***** that my new system wont work.

It also chrashes in 3Dmark and CS. 3Dmark even before it starts up, and with cs and warcraft 3, I can probably play for 30 min.

Can anyone help me?

Make sure you perform a thorough cleaning of your old drivers. What power supply is feeding your system? Also check your default speeds for the 6800.

nvidia recommends a minimum PSU of 480W for that card.

I have a 400w psu. But the thing about 480w was a long time ago. If you look up on many danish(That's where I'm from, DK) websites, you'll see that the req is 350w. Furthermore in the manual it says 350w. I have one Hdd + 2 cd-rom drives connected so 400w should be enough?

The thing about weird colors is a sign of vid card prob. Clean install of drivers should fix it. But, the matter of the 480W psu should be looked at closer. A350w is not much for these new boards and what they carry in total.

it also depends on the quality of the PSU, there are some 350W PSU's that are better than 430W psu's.

Well, that could be the prob, but the psu is a northQ and I know that, these PSU's are good.

Are you using two seperate power cables (not a splitter)?

It's not a "Point of View" 6800 ultra by chance? Some people, (myself included), were getting lockups in Far Cry level loads, Doom3 and the RTHDRIBL demo crashed upon loading. Up until now I've only heard of people in the UK getting this problem, it was solved with a bios flash update file supplied by POV.

Make sure you have dedicated 2 cable strands to your video card with one power connector being utilized from each strand.

If you have already done this, then your power supply is not providing enough power when playing games.

You might want to consider getting an Enermax power supply as they include a dedicated 12v connector for your video card.

I hope this helps. I have a 550 W Enermax, and an eVGA 6800 Ultra and was having the same problem.

I had two power connectors connected to the card - one was a hard disk-style power connector, the other looked similar, and wasn't connected to anything else.

I had freezes ONLY upon starting games, etc.

I looked on the eVGA support boards, and their schematics showed the right connectors generally had three connectors - two large and one small - coming from the PSU.

I switched my second connector for one of this type, and PRESTO! everything was fine. No freeze ups at all.

Clearly a power issue. Now I'm running at 444 MHz / 1.1GHz with a 3dMark03 score of 14,000!
