Well my dad did fix my plexi side perfectly and have it back on, and now I can do 500/950 100% stable, no artifacting too. Before I could do 490/930 100% without artifacting. Was hoping I could do more but oh well. I did run @ 525/970 for a bit but I was getting some artifacting then I kept backing down from there until finding 500/950 is the sweetspot. Maybe I should get another one of those fans.

Re: Geforce FX 5900 Ultra is running hot

Yes, this appears to be common with the 5900. I have noticed that it does not take much to get the fan running in overdrive. However, I am not so sure this would be categorized as a problem. It is more of a eccentricity of the 5900…

Now i speed up my tower fans, the temp is about 35c and i can run 3dmark2003...

hummm, maybe i have to put a extra fan on my gfx card to cool the heat spreader ?

Does someone have this problem ?

See DarkX:

realdieu said the fan also kicks in a turbo mode. May fan was in turbo mode all the time after a install of 45.20.

After a fresh install of 44.67 and all is normal again.

is it worth purchasing a 5900...is it that much faster than a 9700 pro?

No. there is nothing that the 5900 Ultra can do that the 9700 Pro cannot. That is, they employ and utilize all the latest and future gaming technologies support such as HL2 and Doom3.

Save your pennies and go for the 9700 Pro. If you can hold-out, opt for ATI's next iteration. Personally, I do not like the direction that nVidia is going with their GeForce product. Extreme heat issues, mammoth cooling requirements, extreme formfactor, unnecessary noise, and subpar 2D image quality are all unnecessary.

Remember, I own this card and it is just my opinion...

Happy gaming!

3DMark2003 results before and after overclocking

no o/c @ 1280x1024 4xFSAA = 3041
o/c 500/950 @ 1280x1024 4xFSAAA = 3484

about 400 points more... humm in your opinion is it worth keeping my o/c settings or return to default freq ?

Interesting:
P4 2.53 @ 2.73 = same result @ 1280x1024 4xFSAAA = 3484 !

I noticed with the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, that the overclocking frequencies now list separate settings for both 2D and 3D. Has this always been the case or is this something new with this card or the latest Nvidia drivers?

My BFG 5900 Ultra 2D settings were set to 300MHz while the 3D settings were set to 450MHz. I've slowly bumped my 2D settings up to 375MHz with no problems so far and it seems to have made a small difference in speed when doing things in Windows Explorer.

Anybody else have any opinions or info on the pros and cons of bumping this up? Since the card core clock is rated at 450MHz, what drawbacks is there to clocking the 2D setting to the same?

Any advice or info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

cons: it seems in 2D that the GPU fan never runs at full speed, so your GPU may overheat...

I have been running my card at 2D: 350/900 and 3D 500/900 24 hours a day for all of july. I don't think it is running hot for this card. In 2D the core sits about 43C.

PS: The increased 2D setting makes the computer fell very responsive.

Well, I bumped up my 2D clock settings to 400MHz and the idle temp on my 5900 Ultra is at 44C. So not too bad. I also bumped up the 3D settings to 460MHz and memory to 860MHz so far with no problems. I'm going to try bumping up the 3D settings some more over the next couple of days to see how stable it is.

Anybody have any practical cooling solutions? The only thing I don't like about the 5900 Ultra, is that it sits right under the CPU so all the heat on the backside of the card probably bumps up the temp of the CPU. When running idle, I noticed my CPU temp is usually around 100-103 F and my MB temp is around the 100F range.

Any help is appreciated.

Exactly, this is my concern as well. In fact, the whole damn enclosure suffers from increased temperatures due to the barbecue grill better known as the 5900 Ultra...
