Given the recent Geforce/Radeon debate, I was wondering how bad the Geforce 2D quality really is. I currently have a Voodoo3, which doesn't quite compare to the ATI AIW Rage 128 it replaced, but is satisfactory for my needs (vidcap OK, gaming.. want OpenGL).

Bottom line. Am I going to go blind if I get the GTS, or should I go back to driver hell and save my eyesight. LOL.

Thanks for any input.

Well, I know ATI has historically had not-so-stable drivers; however, the Radeon seems to be an exception. I've installed it (both the 32 and 64MB versions) on about half a dozen machines and they've all been absolutely stable.

The 2D quality is just outstanding. I use the 64 MB Radeon with a Sony G500 21" monitor at 1600x1200x85Hz resolution - I can watch movies and streaming video with astounding sharpness and clarity.

In most of the 2D benchmarks that I've read, the Radeon 64MB card does far better than the GeForce 2 cards.

Thumbs up Ditto.!!

Well said,
Just replaced Radeon32ddr/Samsung flat 900nf 19"
with Vivo64MBddr/Samsung flat 1200nf 22" combo.
What can I say but: Whoa! - running 3DM2k @ 2048x1536@32bit/80Hz, 1/2life@1600x1200@32bit/85Hz...quality untouchable - period !
Good to go !

Thanks for the heads up. Seems the Geforce text is so fuzzy, no one can read the post. Have US$200 in the budget, but think I'll hold off and see if the prices come down in the next week or so. Last ATi I bought was $75 less a month later !! Damn.

Thumbs up Vivo64

Well,
right now, you can get a Radeon ViVo 64MB DDR for $ 200 - with ATI mail in rebate (CompUSA, etc...)
Regards,
Bajo.

Wink

Yep eddie, the site looks good.
But if you add shipping, waiting & mail return (in case of problems) for almost the same cost, as opposed to eye to eye deal in the store - good to go for me...
Of course, I'll use a good online store if that's my only choice, though.

They only charge $8 for Fed-EX saver shipping ,so you will still be buying it for less than $190 ,and it will be delivered in less than 3 or 4 days ,and the last time I checked they had a very high reseller rating ,and when any company uses FED-EX the chances of anything happening to your order are almost none . I seriously doubt you could find a Retail 64 Radeon for less than $250 in normal store ,and even if something was wrong with the card you would only have to pay $8 to ship it back ,but if you bought it from a normal store you would have to drive to the store and return it anyway so either way it will cost you to return the product if something goes wrong ,so overall buying from a reputable online store that uses the best delivery service for at least $50 less sounds like a much better deal to me .

Wink ViVo64 Retail

Well, doubt no longer, Eddie !
I paid $209 last week at Comp USA, and saw a card, just yesterday at Best Buy, for $ 199.99 - go figure...
And, ofcourse, add an ATI mail in rebate, and you save an extra $10 on top of all - not bad.

Bottom line- we all have a choice and prices are great,
anyway you wanna' do it.
Bajo.

I had no idea prices were so cheap in normal stores .With prices that low your totally right ,its to a persons advantage to buy it from a normal store instead of online .I haven't been in Texas for more than a year ,so I really had no idea prices were that low .

Yep indeed,Eddie, I live in big ol' TX, with (sometimes) great tiny prices..hehe
I hope that prices will be dropping even more, with all the new toys on a horizon...As a reseler & exporter,
I kinda' have a nose for good deals - nothing compared to your oc knowledge, though (!) - but makes me happy, if I can help people here, on where to shop or check the certain goodies...
Regards,
Bajo.

For the record, the ASUS V7700 Pure 32MB has decent text, not quite as good as the old Voodoo3 but OK. It's my NEC AS75F that worries me now. 1024x768@85Hz has nice crispy borders, and a 5 inch diamater blur in the middle. Anything lower and it's jitter city. I can't win.
