Getting artifacts with Doom 3????

Hi,

I thought I'd share my experiences with Doom3.

When i first installed the game, I was getting Artifacts - little dark cloudy ones, usually when there was a lot of lighting effects going on, and especially in Cut Scenes.

I was annoyed to say the least - check my sig for my specs.

Basically if i under clocked my card down to 400Mhz the artifacts went away. Strange thing was thou, when i put my card in a friends machine and set it to stock - we didn't get any artifacts!!

So i realized it had something to do with my system - my Processor is overclocked by 10%, so i set it to the standard 3.0Ghz and hey presto, my system now plays Doom 3, without artifacts and my Card has HyperDrive enabled so it's running up to 425-430 Mhz without artifacts - woohoo!!

So i guess everyone will have a different experience. In my case Doom3 just didn't like the fact that my MOBO was overclocked - but has no problem with my GPU being overclocked...............

Just thought i'd share............

take it easy, unless you're playing Doom 3!!!

Other users have encountered the same phenomenon, especially with Asus cards. There's some threads around here about it.

Hi,

Yeah, I've read those - but as you can see from what i wrote in the original post, it's not to do with the card - it was to do with the CPU being overclocked................

I just wanted to let everyone know in case they are getting the artifacts and also have their CPU's overclocked.

Cheers,

DrRedD......

I had spotty artifacts sometimes with my asus 9800xt and my computer is overclocked too. I have a 6800ultra installed in my computer now and I have not seen any spotty textures at all. I think it is the cooling fans on the asus xt cards.

I run my cpu well overclocked and my Video too and am yet to see any artifacts. Id read that some 9800xt were having issues as they are overclocked to begin with, and Doom3 uses parts of the GPU virtually untouched by other games

ASUS 9800XT uses something similar to OverDrive but it's called HyperDrive and requires SmartDoctor to be installed as well as the ASUS Enhanced Driver along with the CAT's - yes it's an qutomatic O/C tool - the latest version of SmartDoctor seems to work pretty well.

The cooling fans on my ASUS 9800XT have never let me down, and in my particular circumstance, the artifacts i was getting on Doom 3 were down to the CPU being overclocked - now that the CPU is set to "Standard" i have no artifacts and my 9800XT is running OC'd - so like i said IMHO it's nothing to do with the XT.

Maybe it's a combination of an overclocked CPU and just the 9800 series cards............

oh well, who know's - I've decided to go for a 6800Ultra anyway!!!

Hope i get a good price on my 9800XT
