GF4 Ti4600 and CUSL2 problems - major glitches+tears!!

Hi, it's been a while but am i having a nightmare!!
I have just installed a used GF4 Ti 4600 into my pc, but after running it for about <10mins really bad tearing and sparkling starts to occurr. Everythiing is running at totally standard speeds, and the card has aftermarket copper heatsinks on gpu and ram.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause/solution? Or is, as i suspect, the card that's just had-it?

Thanks in advance.

Did this happen before you put on the aftermarket heatsinks?

Check the traces around the memory for any signs of heatsink compound.
Is your CUSL2 overclocked? Does the GF 4 needs AGP 4x?

I've just come back after working away for a few days, thanks for your replies
In response -

My power supply is a cheap 300w unit, bought from a comp fair, about 12 mnths ago, could this be the problem? My ipanel reads 1.69 (seems quite low), 3.28 and 4.97 for the voltages.

I didn't actually fit the ramsinks myself - the previous owner did. He is reputable and no stranger to modd'ing kit, he previously owned a hardware website here in the UK. The problem is, i bought the card from him last week and I haven't been able to get it to function but he is sure it was/is 100% working. I was very careful when istalling the card - observed all the usual anti-static precautions etc, so i can't possibly see how it could be damaged.

The sinks themselves appear to have been attached neatly with care, there are no obvious signs of any compound spilling over the side of the chips.
As for AGP, i have the 1008 001 tweaked bios which has allowed me to enable AGPx4. Incidentally i have tried the card with the tweaks enabled and disabled.
The card is not currerntly overclocked, neither is my processor, and i even lowered the I/O voltage to the 3.3v setting just in case. I've even tried underclocking the card to 275/590, but nothing made any difference.

The saga continues.....

The cheap 300w P/S is definitely suspect? That 4600 draws a lot of juice! You'd probably get away with a top quality 300 W P/S, but then I would want a 400W unit if running a GF4 4600!

This is overclocking and heat issues.. Try better case cooling and making sure the Videocard has heatsink thermal paste. You can correct this for now with a lower cpu core and ddr ram speed.

Also make sure your not adjusting the volts with the pins on the motherboard. Pushing more volts into the VIO does help with overclocking but it can also make your hardware run much hotter.

a lot of people have had trouble with that motherboard and a Geforce 4 Ti 4400 and 4600. test it on another motherboard if you can. I had trouble with mine (CUSL2-C) and had to buy a newer motherboard (P4S533), now it works great.

thanks again for the help, some more v intersting developments since yesterday!

Last night i thought i'd give it another go, just in case , as you do. I tried the 29.42 dets, as they are the latest version supported by the "geforce tweak utility", and thought they may a difference.
Anyway, once installed it ran 3dmark2001 all the way through absolutely fine, over and over again!! ??
In the driver options i upped the FSAA to quincunx and anisotropic filtering to a middle setting and ran 3dmark2001 again. This time the corruption appeared.
Suspecting that a pattern may be appearing, i disabled the fsaa and anisotropic filtering and lo+behold 3dmark ran again without a hitch or glitch.

Convinced it was a PSU problem, not able to supply the card enough stable power when it was really working hard, i rushed out and bought a 400w twin fan PSU today. ......... BUT
........... when i booted the PC before replacing the PSU (exactly as it was last night) even the POST screen was madly corrupt!!
The psu also made no difference, infact the problem seems to be *so* intermittant that sometimes the machine will run for a while with no artifacts, other times it's extremely corrupt on POST.

I'm now convinced it's a problem with the agp slot on the mobo - if the card's positioned exactly correctly, all is fine, but when the card and mobo experience temp changes overnight or whenever they move slightly in relation to each other and this is causing a bad connection between the "pins" in the slot and the card.

Next plan is to remove the mobo and try the rig outside the case............

all part of the fun i suppose.

It seems i am not alone with this.................

I can't RMA this one, 'cos it's had ramsinks and copper gpu cooler added.
I hope it's an issue with cetrain cards on certain boards, I'll have to try the card in another mobo - preferably the same model mobo as the previous owner of the card has.

Thumbs up hyas dude

sorry to hear of your problems.

I was using the CUSL2 1006 bios for the longest time. I had absolutely no problems with either my ti500 Hercules Geforce 3, or installing and playing games with my Asus ti4600 Geforce 4.
I had thought the PIII 1 gig was all I was gonna get into the m/b, tho I was able to o/c to the 140 fsb and get 1050, and was perusing these forums and spotted the CUSL2 tweaked bios`.
I found the Asus Live Update utility here as well, and updated thru windows XP to the 1008TW bios. Still haven`t had any problems with the Geforce 4, using the det 40.41s now. Great drivers. I hope you find a way to rememdy your situation. Wish I could have been more helpful.

addendum: I am as well at the 143 fsb. Getting 1071 now.

!!! solved, i think !!!

Thanks Shataan, and everyone else

I couldnt make sense of what was happening, ie. moving the card around in the slot trying to get results. I still can't explain waht the issue was BBBBUUUTTT..........

Today i flashed my CUSL2 with the tweaked 1012 beta 002 bios from here...

http://www.x86-secret.com/articles/tweak/i815twken.htm

..... and touch wood, no problems since then (4 hrs continuous use).

I advise all those with similar problems to flash their bios with the most recent available, then try again.

All the best,

Geraint.

Glad you found the cure! Now, what version bios were you using?
Yes, that explains it! Your video card was was running at 2X, because you had your fsb over 140. The tweaked bios is allowing your vid card to run at 4X! DOH! I didn't notice your overclock before!
