Question Got my 5900 FX Ultra but need advice on tinkering

Well, I got myself a "used" BFG Asylum 5900 FX Ultra card for $350 (shipped). Installed it, and it seems to work.

Using: WinXP Pro SP1, ASUS P4C800 mb with P4 2.4C (no overclocking) with 512megs of DDR400 ram. The nVidia driver is 45.23, no overclocking (set to "Performance 3D" parms using coolbits) @ 450/850. My monitor is a LCD 18.1 ViewSonic.

Here are my questions:

1) I ran 3DMark2003 with 1280x1024 , AA none, Texture Filtering = Optimal, Max Antisotropy = 4, Vertext Shaders = Optimal.
I got a score of 4391. Isn't it a bit low?

2) Ran AquaMark 3 test (in the shareware version DEFAULT mode) and got a score of 36,388.

3) I do want to overclock the card, but don't want to take it to the "edge". Anyone with ideas what the limit for this one should be about? I want to use the standard cooling that it came with.

4) Should I set / change anything else within the nVidia control setup?

Any and all advice is appreciate. And please don't tell me to get an ATI card as I am sticking with this one.

Dude, did you not see all the replies in your thread asking about which NV card to get? It explains why stuff would be lower than you think it would. . .

350 bucks, jeezow.

Do you own stock with Nvidia or something? Wife work in accounting, maybe? Got that NV logo tattoo?

I see people posting 6000+ 3dmarks2003

socres using nVidia 5900 FX Ultra chipsets. That's why I am wondering why I am only getting around 4391. Now, I dont know if these 6000+ scores one is getting with 1024x768 resolution or the 1280x1024? Or does it matter?

And I would rather hear from people about overclocking parms for this particular card than to BURN mine out by experimenting.

Sell that 5900 to some unsuspecting sucker and buy a 9700/9800 series. I went from a 9700>fx5900U>9800.....5900U=poo, Ti4600 and previous Nvidia cards = good.

My card list over the years:

Voodoo1
Nvidia Riva128
Voodoo2
Nvidia TnT
Nvidia Geforce 256
Nvidia Geforce2 Ultra
Radeon 8500
Nvidia Geforce3 Ti500
Nvidia Geforce4 Ti4600
Radeon 9700 Pro
FX5900U
Radeon 9800 Pro

FX5900 reminds me of my Radeon 8500 during the "ATI bad driver era" .....both stayed in my system less than a week. Haven't you noticed that a lot a vendors won't give refunds on FX5900's? Meh....you can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.

why is the 5900 FX ultra being bashed?

Look here:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1890&p=9

This is a preview of the NV38 and the Radeon 9800 XT test scores. When I look at those test scores, I see that 5900 FX Ultra beating the Radeon 9800 Pro in many of the scores.

So, I am quite pleased with the 5900 Ultra -- just want to get the most out of it...

If the card does what you want it to do, then more power to ya....anyway, check those 6000-level results and compare the driver version used; Nvidia got busted big time for driver cheating in 3dmark.

tinkering inside the nVidia Control Panel

First of all, I am using the 45.33 drive (not the .45.23 WHQL)

I guess with regard to the nVidia control panel settings, should I try changing anything there? This is what I have now:

** Performance & Quality Settings **

Image Setting = Quality
Antialaising = Application
Anisotropic= Application
Texture Sharpening = Turned Off

** Direct 3D Setting **

Enable fog table emulation = Turned On
Mipmap Detail Level = Best Image Quality
PCI texture = Use up to 63 megs (my card has 256megs of RAM)
Verticle Sync Mode = Auto-select
Render no more than = 3 frames ahead

** OpenGL Setting **
Disable support for enhanced CPU instruction set = Turned Off
Enable comformant OpenGL texture clamp behavior = Turned Off

Any suggestions?
