Help teach an old computer new tricks !

Hi,

I have an older computer with PCI slots and an AGP 2x/4x slot. I've heard of lots of trouble with AGP 8x cards in these older AGP slots though I guess they fit.

So I guess I need either a PCI or AGP 2x/4x card that supports my new widescreen monitor at 1680x1050.

I've been having trouble finding this with the older AGP format. I don't care about performance (obviously on this very old machine) so should I just go with a PCI card? If I go PCI, can I get just about any PCI card that does the resolution that I need?

Thanks,
Randy

I also saw that one on newegg. But I don't think the radeon 7000 does wide screen resolutions. I thought I needed to go to the radeon 9250 or above.

I'm looking into the ATI software too, my current adaptor which does not show any wide screen resolutions available, is a rage 128 pro ultra. But I don't have any ATI software loaded, just the microsoft drivers.

Re: Help teach an old computer new tricks !

I may be wrong about the radeon 9250 as well. According to the ati web site

Radeon™ 9200 Series

It looks like it does not do 1680x1050 resolution.
The site says:

2D display modes:
Resolutions, colors and maximum refresh rates (Hz) in 256, 65K or 16.7M colors:
Monitor Resolution Hz
640x480 200
800x600 200
1024x768 200
1152x864 200
1280x1024 160
1600x1200 120
1920x1080* 16:9 120
1920x1200 100
1920x1440 90
2048x1536 85

Re: Help teach an old computer new tricks !

Running 1680 x 1050 is more a driver thing at that point. It's quite possible they published those resolutions before 1680 x 1050 was popular. Maybe check on Rage3D for someone that has more experience with that card. They specailise in ATI products.

Re: Help teach an old computer new tricks !

I did find some people running dual 22" monitors at 1680x1050 with a Radeon 9250 card so that's what I decided to get. Picked one up from amazon.com for $44 shipped.

Re: Help teach an old computer new tricks !

I did a search on 4x/8x compatibility and found that they are supposed to be compatible and a lot of people are doing just what you say is working for you. So I am going to go that route. Opens up the video card selection quite a bit...

Re: Help teach an old computer new tricks !

I too had no problems running AGPx8 cards with CUSL2-C AGPx4 slot.

Just saw that HD3850 from Sapphire is available for 106$ on Newegg. Depending on other parts of your rig, you may even be able to play some recent games with this.

Greetings

Dru
