Higher core or higher frequency?

This has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer in the forums.

When OC'ing a vid card, which is better:

Having a higher core or having a higher memory frequency?

both.

up the core as high as it will go without artifacting, then set it back to stock. then do the same for the memory

then what i would do is set it a few clocks low of what the max stable was for both.

Using ATI Tool's auto "Find Max Core/Freq.," it auto decreases the Core using an algorithm if it finds that raising the freq. causes artifacts.

I figure getting the 9800pro (xt) to about 400mhz core and 350 Mem Freq. is good enough for the card. It maxes at about 412/360 on stock cooling. That's just below an XT.

Those timings also raised both 3DMark's scores by about 300. Worth the OC, or should I just keep it safe and run stock speeds?

try playing some games and see how much extra fps boost you get, if it isn't much, then disable it.

You can only up the core so much before it will be bottlenecked by the memory frequency. This is why you need to up both. It takes a lot of time and patience to find the optimum settings for both.
