I'm guessing ATI schools nVidia before even reading the article, but truth be told does it really matter? It's all about 'optimizations'

Sure, ATI may school nVidia with HL2, but nVidia sure put the smack down in FarCry and Doom III. It all depends which developer is in bed with which video card mfgr. Now, if ATI or nVidia were to really dominate in 5 or 6 of the blockbuster games in succession, then I would really be impressed.

Well, that is true. However, since HL2 appears to be the better game overall...it should be interesting how it all plays out.

Judging the fact that UT2004, World of Warcraft, and plenty more, all have that nVidia logo "The way it's meant to be played" or something, I wouldn't be surprised if nVidia pulls ahead.

who knows for sure though... everyone thought ATI was doomed and that nVidia was going to be leading the pack with their previous series (5900/5950) but just about everyone agreed that the 9800 pro was the better card AND the better value. That allowed ATI to get back in the game so now I am sure of one thing: I have no idea who will be pulling ahead in any near future

Isn't it just application specific? For the Cat drivers, you can force certain settings for each method (D3D, OpenGL, software), but it's the application itself that determines what it will be using. Some games, for instance CS, will give you the option for your video rendering.
