Re: im a totall noob need help please

Always been a big PC Power & Cooling fan...

They just happen to have a Silencer 500 EPS12V that can supply 35A on the 12V rail:

Silencer 500 EPS12V

And the specs indicate that it should be fairly quiet as well. I haven't personally built any systems with the Silencer 500, but I have helped build two single video card systems with the Silencer 610; however, the 610 is apparently spec'd out to be a bit noisier than the 500. But, then again, it can pound out up to 49A on the 12V rail as compared to the 500's 35A. Here's the Silencer 610 EPS12V:

Silencer 610 EPS12V Power Supply - PC Power & Cooling 610w PSU

The Silencer 610 EPS12V can be purchased for about $120 from newegg.com. Haven't seen the Silencer 500 EPS12V listed for sale at newegg.com yet, but I bet it will be arriving shortly... seems like it's a newer model than the others, if memory serves me correctly. Would think you'd be able to pick up the Silencer 500 for under $100 and probably be quite happy with it.

Only caveat that I can think of is that the 610 is about 1" deeper than a standard ATX power supply, so keep this in mind if you go with the 610. Otherwise, the 500 appears to be more in-line with a typical ATX power supply depth, so it certainly shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: Looks like the Silencer 500 EPS12V sells directly from PC Power & Cooling for $99, but it's currently listed as "out of stock." Given the good power to noise ratio of this supply, I bet it is pretty popular for single GPU system builds right now. The more I look at it, the more I tend to lean toward recommending the Silencer 500 EPS12V for your particular application. Just check out the diagrams to make sure it's got all the connectors you need on it... and then see how long it will be before you can get one! Anyone else have an opinion on this???

Re: im a totall noob need help please

I upgraded from an Ultra X-Finity 600 that caused all kinds of problems to a PC Powere & Cooling Silencer 750. It really is quiet. No more problems and it's quite future proof. (Planning on adding more hard drives and at least a 2-GPU setup at some point...) You might consider what you want down the road and definitely get lots of amps on that 12v rail. That's the weak spot of most lame PSUs.

I was considering getting Vista 64 after many good reviews of SP1, but sure enough the horror stories continue to trickle in... For the people who get it working well it seems great, but lots of folks here haven't reached Vista Nirvana yet. Seems as though you are forced to use it so you might check out the Vista message boards and see if there are tweaks that might help streamline your rig. (You will look smart in class too if you figure out some tweaks that work. )

Good luck!

Riva Tuner is the best way I've found to tweak all things related to your graphics card. It's a bit complicated but there are tons of instructions and walkthroughs all over the web. I have a 680i MB and it doesn't directly control the graphics card's voltage, just the PCIe bus.

Since you said you were a noob, I am going to ask the obvious. Did you hook the power cord from your PSU to the video card? That would definately cause the problem you listed.
