Unhappy

Just installed PowerStrip, and while playing around with this handy little tool, I noticed that it reports that my video card is 4X capable. Nothing in the dox or info that came with the card have anything to say about supporting 4X speeds. Dare I try it? Are there any repercussions like possibly burning out my video card or damaging the AGP on my mobo? My mobo, btw is a CUSL2-C and it supports 4X. Any one out there running a TNT2 Ultra at 4X? Anyone in the august masses have an opinion?

What TNT2 have you got? Xentor16 or Xentor32? I think that you canīt use AGP 4x in a TNT2, I have a Xentor16 with a P3 733Mhz and I can put AGP 4x but I donīt win performance. I think that the AGP 4x is not suported by TNT2/TNT2 Ultra.

My Computer:
ASUS CUSL2-C
P3 733Mhz (5.5x133)
256Mb RAM at 133Mhz CAS @2-2-3
Maxi Gamer Xentor TNT2 16Mb
SB Life!

Here are my results on 3DMark 2000 and Quake 3.

3Dmark 2000 - 1024x768-16bits Z16 TB.
3470 3dmarks
276 cpumarks

Quake 3 - 16bits MAX Quality.
640x480 = 102,7fps
800x600 = 80,4fps
1024x768 = 55,2fps

Please post in this forum your results, I donīt really know if my VGA is used at 100%. Thanks.

On further investigation, the TNT2 Ultra chipset is in fact 4X compliant/capable according to the NVidia specs for the chip. The board I have is the Xentor 32 TNT2 Ultra. I don't use quake and I've never really bothered to benchmark my video. I can tell you that I play Half Life Counter strike in 32bit color with all the effects turned on with a screen size of 1280x1024 and get a reliable 65 fps. I still don't know if this particular board will handle the wider pipe. You say you've tried 4x with no performance gain, do you think its CPU related?

For anyone thats watching this thread, I've successfully set up my video to run with all the bells and whistles enabled, AGP 4X, USWC, Sidebanding, etc., etc., with no probs. Powerstrip reports:

Diagnostic report
--------------------------------------------------
CPU speed - 966 MHz
System board - Intel
Primary graphics card - nVidia 0029h
Silicon revision - 11h
Graphics memory clock - 183 MHz
Graphics engine clock - 175 MHz
Graphics card BIOS version - 04/29/99
Graphics card IRQ - IRQ11, not shared
Graphics card AGP revision - 2.00
System board AGP aperture - 64 MB
USWC enabled - yes
System board AGP transfer support - 1x, 2x, 4x
Graphics card AGP transfer support - 1x, 2x, 4x
AGP traffic currently enabled - 4x
System board SBA - supported
Graphics card SBA - supported
AGP sideband currently enabled - yes
Pipelined transactions - supported, queue depth of 32
System board fast writes - n/a
Graphics card fast writes - n/a
Fast write protocal currently enabled - no
Graphics card memory - 32 MB
DirectX memory - 27 MB
AGP mode - DMA
Windows version - 4.10.2222
DirectX version - 4.08.00.0400
AGP driver - vgartd.vxd - 1.0.26
GART manager - n/a
Display driver name - nvdisp.drv
Display driver version - 4.12.01.0647
OpenGL driver - nvopengl.dll
OpenGL version - 4.12.01.0647

I don't have the time to do benchmarking, but the video is crisper and frame rates in Counterstrike have increased by about 10-15 percent. Purely anecdotal evidence, but there it is for what it's worth. Anyone else thinking of running your TNT family of video card at AGP 4X, I got this from Guillemot today:

-----cut--------
Dear customer,

All TNT2 series of video cards are capable of using AGP 4x mode. Here is a
comparison sheet from NVIDIA's web site:
http://www.nvidia.com/Products/TNT2.nsf/Matrix.html
-----cut--------

So crank it up! You might not see any performance benifit if your CPU can't push enough data to the card, but if you are running above about 900 mhz, you should see some perf increase.
