| Re: Now, it's the 4870's turn... Playing around and googling "fan control for 4870" I found that a guy over at Hexus and Guru3D has used the ATI CCC and profiles-----to speed up the normal fan speed on both 4850s and 4870s When I looked at the fan speed in the XML file of my 4850----it is set to a defalut of only 14% I hate noise------so I only speeded mine up to 35-40% which is VERY quiet----yet faster----and definitely cooler At 35%----it dropped my temps in my hot garage by 10C At 40%----it dropped the temps 13C And the difference in noise at that level is unnoticeable....(at least to me) I tried 65% as suggested but the darn thing sounded like a jet engine----way too noisy----but it dropped temps 23C The danger would be that you have altered the "automatic" scheme that spins up the fan when it get's REALLY hot! But I think ATI's auto profile needs work because 80C is ALREADY hot---and my fan wasn't running very fast when she hits 80C. You have to start the profile each time you boot----but you can set a dsktop shortcut or hot key combo to start it.... Kinda neat and a "quick fix" till better drivers and Heat Sink/Fans become available. HEXUS.net - Headline :: How to control the fan speed of your Radeon HD 4850/4870 : Page - 1/1

| Re: Now, it's the 4870's turn... Did some 3dmark 06 today----just playing around Rig 1 Q6600 Quad overclocked to 3.2 with Geforce 8800 GTX 12888 Rig 2 9850 BE Phenom overclocked to 2.7 with ATI 4850 12400 Some impressions: I'm still playing with the overclock on the 9850 BE----slowly bumping it up----if I can get it to 2.8 with stability----it will equal or beat the Rig 1 score Amazing to me that I get virtually the same performance from $385 worth of parts compared to over $1000 spent initially on the Intel and nVidia parts-----I know tech changes and improves rapidly----but these ATI cards look like a STEAL.... Decided I'm going to get a 4870 and use the 4850 I got so cheaply at Best Buy ($150) on a different rig.... The 4870 looks just too good to pass up...... My other impression is how good my tried and true 8800 GTX still does----even after almost two years! -----I spent a lot----but I got a lot!!! And a Q6600 still holds its own against almost anything---another "good buy" It's lasting so well that I'm thinking of getting 8 megs of cheap DDR2 and loading Vista Ultimate 64 Bit on this Rig----maybe extend it's lifespan a bit more....64 Bit Vista is....nice....

| Re: Now, it's the 4870's turn... I just saw this on the Wikipedia's Radeon R700 entry: "A dual GPU product using two RV770 GPUs, codenamed R700, is currently planned for a late August to early September 2008 release. The R700 still uses a PCI Express bridge to allow two GPUs on the same PCI Express slot, however the bridge used in R700 now supports PCI Express 2.0. The R700 has a total of 2 GiB GDDR5 frame buffer (1 GiB for each GPU) on board." I had assumed it would have been 512MB for each GPU, not 1GB. If true, this is going to be one mofo of a video card. No wonder the GTX 280's have been dropping like a stone in price.

I am just tired of the idea that a vidcard will cost over $600.... Have been convinced all along that the $600 prices (and higher) was just....... Greed..... Of course----I did pony up for my 8800 GTX----and that card has lasted me double of what a normal "high end" card would..... But I just don't think I'll spend over $400 ever again for a vid card....

| Re: Now, it's the 4870's turn... I'll be very curious about the pricing of this card. While I've never considered SLI/CF this one has got my attention. Even with all the glowing reviews for the 4870 something bothered me about dropping down from the amount of memory my 8800GTX has. It just didn't seem like a true upgrade. 1GB for each GPU combined with what should be a truly significant performance delta means I'm really anticipating this card's release. If all goes as what's been said as the schedule - late July to early August - it'll be here in plenty of time for Stalker: Clear Sky.

| Re: Now, it's the 4870's turn... If the 4870X2 did come with 2GB's of memory on it, it would be a whopper of a card, and most likely slightly longer than the 3870X2.
