Why would new drivers for the 8800's be bad? I've got nothing but giddy feelings about my 8800GTX. The freaking thing is awesome.

I never said they were. I just feel they may not be fully ready for primetime/Vista. I'll see what AMD/Ati comes up with.

Heck... nothing is ready for Vista. I'm just glad that Bioshock and Hellgate: London aren't due until September. Things may be a bit more sorted out by then.
I'm damn glad I don't use laptops or have to depend on someone else to build and troubleshoot my desktops. I feel for those folks that do.

...and with that said, I don't feel sorry for them. Its all about choices!
Anyway, perhaps when Vista SP1 is out for a month or two - I may show interest. Still am curious on how AMD/Ati is gonna do.

Copy that. Even though the early adopters seem to really like Vista, I still wouldn't want to be in the position of possessing next to no computer knowledge and having to poke my way through the problems. On the other hand, that's how I gathered my current level of understanding. Just getting tired of marathon tech support calls and deciding educate myself.
However, we don't have kids and do have the time to invest in learning. Also having an interest in PC gaming and the subsequent desire for game performance helps.

At this point that is what I am doing too. DAAMIT has had a long time now to produce a DX10 card now and I can't help but think the time advantage is going to be the catalyst (ok pun intended ) in both drivers and hardware. We shall see.

I'm not so sure. By the time AMD releases their first-gen product nVidia will be well into their second generation. I suspect they have a pretty good idea of what AMD is going to do and that they have a card ready for release that'll pretty much take the wind out of AMD's sails. But, as you say, we'll see.
It might be that decent Vista drivers will still be elusive at that point, for anyone.

I also think everyone's waiting for the other shoe to drop when Intel finally announces their own line of discrete graphic cards.

I hear what your saying. For me - its not too much of an increase in features/performance to justify a new OS at this point. I don't think I would have a problem adapting to Vista, but I just ask myself a fundamental question - why? The monies saved at this point is going to go towards new hardware and games.
