Building one? I haven't heard of many people that take a project like that up but I would say go with the 8800m GTX. Heres some more info on it:

I believe that the quadro series cards have a driver optimized for autocad software. I would look for reviews on the quadro card that you are interested in getting.

8800 series is built for speed and if I am not mistaken the Quadros are built for accuracy. For AutoCAD I would definately get the Quadro. But if you have other needs in mind also (such as gaming) then the 8800 would work for both. Just depends on your particular situation.

From what I can gather, Quadro (and I'm assuming FireGL) hardware offers the following benefits:

1. Render order is always observed for accuracy first (gaming cards are allowed to shuffle to maintain framerate). This probably affects things like viewport rendering and/or GPU assisted rendering (Nvidia Gelato)
2. Drivers are more 'stable' (usually they are just a revision or two older than the most current drivers)
3. Support, both technical/warranty.
