Newegg has this card for 120USD (after rebate).

I am considering getting it for my daughter's rig (P4P800-D in sig), so that she can play some of the newer games (i.e. Grid racing). However, my concern is that the PSU in her case is an Antec 350w and the Sapphire site recommends: "450Watt or greater power supply with 30Amps on 12 volt with 2x4 power connector".

If I use the PSU calc here:
eXtreme Outer Vision - eXtreme tools for computer enthusiasts
and enter everything in the system + the HD3850 card + 15% capacitor aging, I get 332w.

I don't want to replace the PSU. Thoughts?

Also, would someone please tell me the length of the card (from back plate to end of PCB)? The case I have the P4P800-D in is not very deep. TIA.
I tried to find the length on the Newegg and Sapphire sites, but no joy.

It's absolutely criminal that the card lengths are not in the product specifications!

The only way that I have found out the length of the various new cards is by watching the video reviews of them. There are two or three hardware video reviewers and they always mention the card length since they are looking for something to say about it.

I agree. I almost ordered a 9800GTX thru the EVGA step up program before I called them to confirm the length in their spec sheet online. Turned out the length in the specs was incorrect (the guy I spoke with knew it was) and the actual length was almost 2 inches longer. It would NOT have fit in my case. Good thing I called to confirm before I bought it.

Good idea!!! I hope you gave them at least a 30 minute earful of complaints about the lack of proper information.

If I can't use the 3850, due to PSU requirements or size, maybe I could use one of these:

or
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100229L Radeon HD 2600XT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

I'm pretty sure both of these would play all the latest games reasonably well and perform considerably better than the X800XT in the older games as well.

Thoughts?

The 2600s don't seem to perform much better than my X800XT in benchmarks

The only clear advantage seems to be SM4.0 vs. 2.0, so she'd be able to play newer games that require 4.0, i.e. Grid Racing.

The sweet spot for performance/$ is the Radeon 4850 .... If you wait for a couple of weeks ... it might drop to it's actual MSRP of $199.

Thanks Sammy, but I'm looking for an AGP card I can use with a 350w PSU, for ~125USD.

Hi PeterT.

Maybe i find the time to measure the card inside my case.

Looking at other cards avialable on the net i do regret now that i haven't been waiting for the HIS IceQ3 Turbo. This card has the best cooler imho (blows hot air out of case, reports state that its very silent) and has quite high clock rates.
