Nope, gonna stick with my 3870X2, no offense against the Nvidia hardware, but Nvidia's drivers on Vista stink, and are the cause of over 70 percent of the BSOD's on Windows Vista.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

I have used a BFG 8800 GTX for over a 18 months and it has never let me down. Kinda wish I would have waited 6 months when it was almost half the price but I still stand by the card. It has not been an issue but I am sure the cooling system will fail so I am looking for an aftermarket cooler to extend it's life.

So count this as a no, not yet.

BTW, the 8800 GTX also has 2-6 pin power connectors.

I also bought the 8800GTX---but I got mine the first week they came out....

What a card!!!

And has kept "current" for the LONGEST time. I paid top dollar----but in the end feel like I got a really good deal.

I have NEVER stayed with a graphics card that long.......

The old ATI 9700 was a jump when it was introduced......

This card was a real jump!!!

Same experience, to the letter. Although, I used the eVGA Step-Up Program I did ultimately pay the out-of-the-chute price. But, considering I've been using it since November of '06 I've gotten my money's worth out of it.
Once I decide what I'm going to replace it with my 8800GTX will be a helluva workstation card, though that'll be a bit sad in a way...kind of like putting a great war horse out to pasture.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

it's NOT!!!
most true gamers still use xp, so dx9 is it anyway. ..for now...
so the next major nvidia card will be for maybe vista use and onwards....
please list the new features from dx 10.0 vs 10.1 that are oh so super and that games actually put to good use if at all.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

Sorry my friend----gotta disagree with you....

This time I think it is you who are missing the point.....

This situation will kinda be a "big deal" and it DOES give someone like me----who had set money aside for this card----pause....

I may still buy---but I'm going to do a lot more research.

Also---I play the latest shooter games----on Vista----and DX10----am I a "true gamer"?? who knows.....

Not meaning to razz you----just telling you that for the moment----this news has given me pause and I will go back to researching---and seeing what (if anything) ATI has up their sleeve for the future.

In the end-----why spend the high dollars for something that lacks features when the competion may have ALL the features and performance----for the same price....

Gotta love capitalism.....

Just another reason why I will miss my trusty old 8800 GTX----that was a no brainer decision to buy----a new videocard paradighm.....

Not sure I want to spend $600 for just "more frames in Crysis"

Although more frames would be nice.....

They do? Wow, and to think I just spent all that money building a hot, new Vista64-based game machine so I could run Stalker: Clear Sky under DirectX10.

Ah, well...it depends on your point of view. Certain features available to programmers that are optional under DirectX10 are required under DirectX10.1. The DX10.1 features are still there in DX10, but the programmers have the option whether or not to use them. Under DX10.1 the use is mandatory.
An argument as to it being important or not important can be made either way.

Personally, I don't understand why nVidia just doesn't implement DX10.1 in the next-gen cards. It can't be all that difficult... unless their new cards really aren't all that different under the hood after all.

That being said, not supporting DX10.1 isn't a deal killer for me. I'm more interested in price/performance/power usage differences in the cards. I'm not sure I'd notice the difference between a DX10 game and a DX10.1 game.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

Was doing the research a little bit at a time----as Kimbo suggested....

It appears his ideas on the value of DX10.1 with "current" games has some merit.....

But then I read this:

Quote:
NVIDIA has entered a new realm with the GT200, producing a world class microprocessor that is powerful enough to appear on even Intel's radar. If NVIDIA had the ability to enable GPU acceleration in more applications, faster, then it would actually be able to give Intel a tough time before Larrabee. Fortunately for Intel, NVIDIA is still just getting started on moving into the compute space.

But then we have the question of whether or not you should buy one of these things. As impressive as the GT200 is, the GeForce GTX 280 is simply overpriced for the performance it delivers. It is NVIDIA's fastest single-card, single-GPU solution, but for $150 less than a GTX 280 you get a faster graphics card with NVIDIA's own GeForce 9800 GX2. The obvious downside to the GX2 over the GTX 280 is that it is a multi-GPU card and there are going to be some situations where it doesn't scale well, but overall it is a far better buy than the GTX 280.

Even looking to the comparison of four and two card SLI, the GTX 280 doesn't deliver $300 more in value today. NVIDIA's position is that in the future games will have higher compute and bandwidth requirements and that the GTX 280 will have more logevity. While that may or may not be true depending on what actually happens in the industry, we can't recommend something based on possible future performance. It just doesn't make sense to buy something today that won't give you better performance on the software that's currently available. Especially when it costs so much more than a faster solution.

The GeForce GTX 260 is a bit more reasonable. At $400 it is generally equal to if not faster than the Radeon HD 3870 X2, and with no other NVIDIA cards occupying the $400 pricepoint it is without a competitor within its own family. Unfortunately, 8800 GT SLI is much cheaper and many people already have an 8800 GT they could augment.

The availability of cheaper faster alternatives to GT200 hardware is quite dangerous for NVIDIA, as value does count for quite a lot even at the high end. And an overpriced high end card is only really attractive if it's actually the fastest thing out there.
The card is just not for me..... too big of a PSU needed----too much heat----too much noise---too expensive-----not all features supported

With (in my mind) not earth shattering performance gains overall.....

With 1.4 Billion transistors---certainly a marvel, and will help nVidia in the technology development side....

But not the "new paradighm" of cards (like my 8800GTX was)

which is what I was searching and hoping for....

will see what ATI has to offer.....

Read Anand's full review here and decide for yourself.....

AnandTech: NVIDIA's 1.4 Billion Transistor GPU: GT200 Arrives as the GeForce GTX 280 & 260
