Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

Yeah I still run the 8800 GTX with a $120. water block on top of it. I'm still not ready to turn loose of this GREAT card. In fact I've grown tired of PC gaming and have went to PS3 and big screen HDTV. So for now old faithful 8800 GTX, Getty Up, we're off into the setting sun...

There are at least 8 GTX 280 cards available at NE (+$600.00ea.)

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!

No 260's yet.

So tempting... I don't know if I should act on it yet though!

I am still doing fine performance wise in games with my original 8800 GTS 640MB card. Just looking for better eye-candy and less power consumption if possible for use on this 8yr old OS.

It is a unique CPU and I'm glad NVidia is still working on single GPU cards but I wish it were 45nm.

Sure, the cards will be fast but how expensive will they be? How will the value of the two company's products compare? How long will the 280's be produced with GDDR3? Will nVidia release GDDR5 versions?

Purchase as soon as they're released? I think not. I'd rather see everyone's cards on the table and think about it for a while.
No option for that answer in the poll...
The new ATI 4000 series hasn't been released yet but the 3870 can be had for as little as $125 dollars. Amazing!

One thing about NVidia cards, my 8800GTS 640 and other 8800 versions are darn expensive to produce. Large multi-layered PCB with tons of discrete parts and a huge machined piece of aluminum/copper for a heat sink. These cards won't come down too much. My 8800GTS is still available at EVGA.com for $319.00

Agreed, NVidia should start developing with 45nm rather than the 65nm they're using now.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

I have a 7600GS to use as a replacement for my sold 8800GTS until I get a new ATI card. Oops, wrong thread.

NVidia is going to 55nm which is an 18% decrease in die area. The chip is already huge so I don't see the price coming down too much from extra parts per wafer. Leakage current will go down depending how the process works out and if they leave clocks alone it will cut down on power consumption somewhat but not drastically.

FYI, for those of you already with E-VGA cards I highly recommend the Precision Tuning software available from E-VGA. You can look at and adjust your E-VGA cards settings and create up to 10 profiles. Works great and looks cool.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

Yep - been using it for a while now. Since I burn't up my last GPU due to OC (nothing to due with this program) - I limit my use to FPS monitoring and temp rise only. Nifty utility!

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

i suppose one thing to consider is that a gtx260/280 is meant for those, like myself, who still use a 8800gtx and not anything newer, including the 8800 ultra.
but i digress, perhaps the 280 is STILL not the super duper 8800gtx killer. in that case i'll wait a bit longer and see what develops.

again, i play any and all games under xp (no vista whatsoever, so for me dx 10 let alone .1 means nothing. i won't switch to vista game playing until a game is dx10 exclusive. and then i'll multi boot just for that game)

so yeah.....

I just can't see how they will stay at that price very long.....

If ATI's 4800 series is even remotely popular....

The bottom will fall out of the price of those cards----so----if they were to drop to say a $380-400 range....

Well-----tempting.....

The ball is kinda in ATI's court right now......lets see if they hit the three-----or airball.....

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

I just got back from my three day cancer-fest in Houston where I was so bored I surfed the net on my Treo. (Twelve hour hospital days will do that...)
I read the Tech-Report and Anandtech's reviews of the 200's and came away less than impressed. Overpriced and at times beaten by older existing products. Oh, sure, the 280's a powerful card but in its present iteration it's not the watershed release that the 8800GTX was. My gut tells me this generation of the 200's will be gone by January.
Bring on the launch of ATi's 4800's. Let's see what they've got up their sleeves.
