Based on ATI's results in going to 55nm, I think it will cut power usage quite a bit, unless nV ups the clocks a lot. Looking at folding results people are getting, one 55nm 280 will crush any current Intel Quad and will likely leave even Nehalem in it's dust.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

A lot of circuit characteristics change with a die shrink and depending how well the process goes determines the final results. Leakage current goes down which is good but other effects of the die shrink are negative. ATI went from 80nm to 55 with the HD 3000/4000 series. NVidia is only changing from 65 to 55nm on the power hungry GTX 200's.

Oh you crazy fool, how could you? I mean how dare you waste money like that?

Oops sorry, I just bought one also.I sneezed while my fingure was on the buy button.Guess I'll just have to live with it.But the second sneeze made me hit the buy button on a 1000watt power supply.

I wanted to update my old 7900gtx.I think I'll see big performance boost.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

From what I have read only 9800GX2 owners won't see a performance delta. Anyone with anything less than that should see significant gains, which may scale upwards with future driver releases.

Speaking of which: here's some 200x-series drivers released a few days ago...

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

I have to wonder, though, why someone who insists on running games under DX9 would want to spend so much money on GTX280?
When I had my previous game machine I could run everything - including Crysis - at 1680x1050 under DX9 with all options on very high and very rarely-to-never see a significant slowdown in frame rates. This was with an 8800GTX.

I'm not certain I see the logic of dropping so much cash into a product that won't perform any better (under DX9) than a card from two generations earlier.
To each his own, I suppose.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

Congrats on getting the new cards Obviously the most powerful video card in history and the hugest GPU which probably will never be surpassed. May I suggest joining ABXFolding Team, you two will double our points in no time lol.

I am due to get a lowly ATI 4000 series card soon but I feel 12000 3DMark is sufficient for awhile.

Re: Who's getting a GTX 280 in June ?

Not sure what to do...mostly I play Race/Sims

Ati or nVidia, like the one who gives me more FPS with my E8500 @ 4.0

The GTX 280 sounds great...but,but

Oops, missed this, it's actually ~ 40% decrease in die size (you have to square it). So, yeah - power (and cost) will likely drop a fair bit unless they max out the clock.

Meant die size. I'm referring from 65nm to 55nm is an 18% difference I don't know what this will equate to in new die area difference which is usually measured in milimeters which I have no clue what they are right now. Good catch.
