I've installed both XP and Vista on both a low-end laptop (1gb ram), and a high-end desktop. In both cases, XP was faster. So my question is: What does Vista have that justifies the performance hit?

For me, Vista was more stable. It worked better with our corporate wireless network. It was very easy to find programs (just start typing in search). It looked much better than XP (which is starting to look 'old'). And a bunch of other little things that made it nice to use. Yeah, Aero was a bit slow (we had some really low end graphics card in them) and disk access seemed like it should have been faster - but I had a fast machine so I had no major complaints.

I would not have said all of this a year ago.

A quick update, since I find this kind of funny.

So after the initial irrational fear, some people started poking at the Vista boxes with sticks, and getting the courage to actually try using them. The Vista machines are now pretty much in use constantly. The workstation I "claimed" as my own (in my mind only) is rarely available when I get to work as several people now use it. My profile used to be the only one on the box, now most of the department is on it.

Some of the most vocal anti-Vista people at work a month ago are now the ones with the most elaborate Vista desktops.

After playing around on my wife's laptop, it's not really all that bad once you shut some of the services off................................

All that time spent (and money) learning how to ultimately what? send email? type letters? do research on the net? set up a desktop just like the "other one"?

Of course today with freedom of choice, there no longer is any from that conieving monopoly.

I am a BIG fan of VISTA. But, I would not be changing over a business systems.

It does seem that the benefits of vista only benefit the enthusiest community.

Not cost effective for business systems. Only the payroll checks of the execs at M$ benefit there.
