Vista "Dreamscene" preview available today for Ultimate

It's kinda cool. Looks a bit like the Aurora scene. Problem with it is it takes a steady 20% of one core and about 100mb of RAM to run. Funny I didn't realize you could run video clips as desktop background in Vista. You could have your favorite porn scene play over and over for wallpaper. That would be a big hit at the office.

looks nice...but if it uses up that much resources then I'll stick with the standard Desktop wallpapers...

Extras : Windows DreamScene

Only thing I have been able to play on it so far is the preview that came with it and the sample videos that come with Vista. I tried a couple from the site that polonyc2 posted and they do not show up in the desktop background window or in the DreamScene content folder. I paste them in there and they disappear. Not sure what's going on Maybe you need to have Ultimate activated? I have been able to get all other Ultimate extra updates so far though, like the cheesy poker game. I thought it would be cool as hell to have "Elephants Dream" play in the background but wrong format I guess.

I'm still enamored with my plain black desktop. I can stare into the abyss and it talks back to me.

Oh oh. I think compudementia may have set in You may have to take your computer in to be looked at
I found this site that has some WMP HD content and they seem to work
WMV HD Content Showcase
I would prefer more abstract content. Not to mention once the novelty wears off it is not at all practical. Right now I am running "Robotica" from the page posted and one core is going from 37%-47% and the other around 20% Funny I remember reading on an M$ site (sorry don't have it handy) how the DreamScene would use hardly any CPU resource and rely almost solely on GPU. From what I have seen so far that's some serious BS. It's a neat idea, but it needs some serious work.

Thanks for the heads up Speed. I'll be doing a reinstall this weekend and was trying to decide whether to continue with the Business 64bit version or Ultimate 32bit. You helped answer my question. I want to see this in action now. Interesting about the CPU usage. If you load a game up does this continue to run in the background or go idle or something? Or do you have to turn it off?

From what I was able to determine, it does go idle if the desktop is not shown. However if you are doing something in a window other then full screen it continues to run. The process runs through explorer.exe (naturally) so I was able to monitor the CPU usage through Task Manager and it does drop off as soon as the desktop is no longer shown. You can also pause it by right clicking on the desktop. There will be a new option to pause DreamScene after installing it. I am running "The Living Sea" from the page I posted now. Very cool indeed.

It's nice to see Microsoft putting in a real effort where it's needed. [/sarcasm]

I can run video as the desktop background in XP using BSPlayer. On a 1.2 giggle hurtz Tualeron and a Matrox G400. Not HD, of course, but then again I've read that HD pr0n is a disturbing and off-putting experience.

yes I know it isn't a totally novel idea. I used to have a leaf in moving water background a long time ago. Though HD is a bit new. It's gimmicky I know, but I still think it's kinda cool. Gives the high dolllar CPU something to do besides spreading spunk in this forum I haven't seen any HD prOn yet, but must admit to some morbid curosity.
