Windows Vista 64 gaming

My Windows Vista 64 gaming expirence took a dramatic turn for the better recently.

I reinstalled Windows Vista 64, installed all the compatibility patches, including the SLI/Crossfire patch, the beta 163.67 Nvidia drivers for Vista 64, and started installing games.

Among the games I have installed that actually work now, compared to earlier this year, when I had an AMD Crossfire rig, when most games wouldn't even run on Vista 64, include Quake 4 patched to version 1.4.2, and Knights Of The Old Republic. One of the other reasons I'm also having better luck now, getting games running, is once they are installed, if they are not a native Windows Vista Game bearing the Games for Windows Logo, like Company Of Heroes does, on the compatibility tab, I disable the Windows Vista visual theme and set the game to run in Windows XP with Service Pack 2 mode.

It's not the 64-bit OS that's to blame when an old game doesn't work. The game was likely written in an abnormal way that assumed too much about the host OS.

So far every game I have that I tried on Vista x64 ran without issue.

Re: Windows Vista 64 gaming

Actually, I would never recommend his implications. He has been proven false and inaccurate. He even had such notifications within the web site. Stating how a service was disabled, but he had no ramifications from it, to his knowledge, as of that time printed.

It is better to leave services as installed by the Operating System. However, if resources from reputable sources, give managing advice then I would be more keen to it. An example would be a resource kit from Microsoft.

Remember most tweaks, are not tweaks. Many have no effect on the system performance and may give back only a minuscule amount of RAM for an issue that it most likely will cause. This even goes for Linux also. I have seen much in error with Linux for “tweaks” too.

TweakGuides.com - The TweakGuides Tweaking Companion

This one looks very nice

A lot of info, always interesting...although a lot of reading.
I have learned a lot.

Re: Windows Vista 64 gaming

Hansje, it is better to learn a lot from credible sources. Take for instance a common tweak of turning off indexing service in Windows XP. This can easily be disproved by showing you that indexing is already disabled and not in use at all!

Right click on My Computer and move the pointer down to manage and select this. The Computer Management console will be loaded and you will need to navigate the pointer to the last option within the option pane. This will be Services and Applications. Expand this category by clicking on the plus. The last option within this category will be the Indexing Service. Select this option with the pointer and once highlighted note the play arrow within the tool bar. Do not click on this option by move the pointer over to have the tool tip highlight pop up. Note that it says “Start Indexing.” Indexing has never been on, nor have paths been to set for indexing to monitor except C:\System Volume Information.

Many of the tweaks have been debunked and proven false. Usually, the best tweak is not to follow their advice. Unless it is a credible source with proven information concerning the applicable configuration that may give a more optimal performance. Always take what is given as such with a grain of salt, especially if on the Internet.
