Winxsx growing like a bad weed

If your like me and make backup images of your OS, you're probably as alarmed as I am at how fast a Vista installation can grow.
Mine is still only 4 days old and my Acronis image is almost 3 gigs larger than the first one, my documents and game installs are on a separate drive..
Tree size free
Shows the winsxs folder is well over 6.5 gigs!
Over 500 mgs in a folder called "backups" alone..
At first I thought winsxs stood for Windows Suxs but it's actually windows side by side and there is a good read about it here, but no solutions as of yet.
