As for the threats and negativity in this thread, I wish it would stop since we have been working hard to get ABXzone to become more relevant in terms of discussions it fosters. I hope that members here will try to help.
no offense to Maico as he seemed like a decent guy but I really feel he was not the right man for the job...he pretty much admitted he had very little technical knowledge and some of his more recent moves made no sense at all...I resigned from the News Team because he made up some nonsense about not being able to include links in News posts...something that is done on EVERY single forum in existence...he then altered the rule to include links to 'major' websites only

I tried explaining this to him many times but he wouldn't budge...I even reminded him that you gave the OK to post links in News forums but he became even more adament that his way was the right way and the only way...I understand wanting to create more user generated content in these forums but that should not apply to News posts...seems like he was just making up new rules just for the sake of exerting his power

either way...enough of my rant...hope Maico turns up someplace where his skills can be better utilized but ABX is better today then it was yesterday

I think that if the users here would have been asked they would have told you about the broken links before the problems arose.

Never the less we are grateful and appreciative of all of your efforts.
I should have checked with you guys first and I did ask my engineer to make a back up just in case. I have to always prioritize which battles I want to fight, but smilies is not one of them which is why I reversed my position immediately when I saw that it mattered to some.

I will keep making changes until this forum blows up, or we find the right formula to creating relevant discussion that gets us some search engine or blog traffic. I do want to redo the forum index structure to update it for what is currently relevant. Any input on this is very welcome. We have subforums that are no longer posted in and I think some have to be merged or renamed in order to clean up the list.

Good man sanjay.

Smilies were removed at request of Maico Shark who does not like animated smilies on forums he runs for us. I somewhat agree because using smilies instead of words is very high school in my opinion, but I acquiesced to his request not thinking it a big deal.
I like Maico Shark. But if he is rigid in his thought then it looks like he might not be compatable with ABX then which I am going to touch on now, that's the "Supporting Computers Building Friendships" part. - The forums here at ABX grew because computer builders would search everywhere for a solution to their computer problem and find ABX. As they looked through and read threads here for the solution to the current problem at hand, they would also see other quality solutions to other problems. And finally, they would see an increadable amount of social activity in various threads, mostly in Open Chat, but also spilling over into hardware and software discussion threads. This, per dozens and dozens of new members, existed no where else, not on any other computer forum. So they solved the problem, they stayed, they were social, they learned a lot, they then posted solutions to new queries. The smilies evolved for the social aspects as well as the computer aspects of things. - "using smilies instead of words is very high school in my opinion" - perhaps on many forums they are. Here the elaborate explanations exist in posts as well as the terse smilie post, and most posts have that nice blend as you will see in my first line above where I "toast" you with the two clicking glasses smilie.

I remember those days when ABX threads would be on the first page of a google search. We even had Asus tech support technicians posting here.

Sounds like a call for a new discussion thread.

As polonyc2 mentions above, the ABX forums never feared any reference link posted anywhere in any thread or post here. The source seems to be a good link for a news article to have of course, but in the forum body threads it was common to see a reply to a posted problem be something like: "you can find the information you need to fix your problem here [link] here [link] and here [link]. Post back and let us know if that solves your problem." Pasted into the post would also be some relevent content from the references. And so the new member would come back and post his updated situation, hopefully a fixed problem, and the staying cycle occurs.

Re: The smilies are all screwed up today

Sanjay,

Thanks very much for your response, for the information, for the corrective actions which are being taken, and for your reasoned perspectives on the issues which have arisen in the recent past. Hopefully now the members and the administration will function together with greater synergy.

Concerning the smilies which have not yet been restored, a quick way to tell (at least for many of them) is to simply look at my post and Traveler's which appear above in this thread, and see if the smilies which we listed as still needing to be restored appear as text or as smilies.

Best regards,
-- Al
