Re: What happened to the edit function?

Just for reference, I believe this is the specific thread that hawkeyelom is referring to:

http://www.abxzone.com/forums/f41/in...rg-113330.html

My post in that thread (the last post in it at the time of this post) could not be edited, even immediately after making it.

Re: What happened to the edit function?

Well, that's the issue we're addressing here, in this thread. It is not helpful to make such observations in the midst of an ongoing technical conversation by members unconcerned with this particular bug (at least at the moment). To post such irrelevant complaints could be viewed as hijacking and at the least is distracting to those involved in the discussion.

This support forum is the only place to report bugs in our system. If they are not resolved in a timely manner we must simply be patient with the understanding that everyone must live within their budget and techs are expensive. Every post in this forum is forwarded to our tech staff who evaluates and prioritizes according to their schedules.

As administrator of ABXZone, I am here every day. I fix those problems that I am able to, and pass along those that are beyond me. I will say that I will not allow editing of posts after 24hrs. I have absolutely no problem with editing before that period and most forums I've belonged to do not allow more than an hour.

So as an aside to the techs, if editing is restored to all the forums, please be sure to allow it for no more than 24 hrs after the post is submitted.

As a registerd user, I am dismayed at your attitude as reflected in the above. I DISAGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID.
I believe users should detrmine policy not admins.

It is WRONG for you to jump on zsaz 1029 for his test post on the Skyburg forum... There were already posts there about the loss of the edit function (complaning about the change BTW). And his post did not harm anyone nor disrupt on going discussions. Gee get a clue

And last., who are you to determine that the edit limit shopuld not exceed 24 hours?..I believe it was longer than that (perhaps unlimited...I don't know for sure) before without problems. You have been on board for only a few weeks and should NOT be making policy in my not so humble opinion. I don't mean to be unkind, but I am, not impressed.

Well occasionally it does happen, but it would be < 1% of the time IMO.

An example is the STALKER thread in the gaming forum, where I posted a FAQ for newbies in the OP... over time it was periodically updated to reflect our evolving knowledge about the game.

This would also apply to tech posts where a fact was discovered to be incorrect and the poster wants to correct it so its not misleading... happens occasionally. Some of the how-to guides come to mind.

But I think that 99% of the usual edits (spelling, typos, etc) would mostly happen in the first 24 hours so would be covered by the 24hr policy that Maico wants. I think anything else beyond that and the member needs only to PM the relevant mod and the mod could re-open the post on a one-off basis. Shouldn't happen too often so I dont think it would be any significant burden on the mods and would be case by case.

Its an interesting topic actually, because we did have unlimited edit feature in the past as someone pointed out, and it was very well managed by the membership. I think it was a positive indication of the maturity of the forum membership we have here at the zone. Most edits were cosmetic to correct spelling/typos and otherwise were appropriate in the context. If anyone did anything that caused inconsistencies it would be picked up pretty quickly by the other members.

However there was a threat to delete posts by some disenfranchised members a while ago and so, as is often the case, the few ruined it for the many.

But really if you think about the 24 hour policy that Maico wants I think you will see that its quite adequate, so long as the mods can accept the odd request now and then to open an old post for a legitimate edit.

I think the idea of the democratic process where the membership determines policy is a great one in principle, however ultimately the admins have to make decisions on the fly in response to site needs to implement the site owners directions and policies and to maintain order.
It doesnt mean that we members cannot get the changes and features we want; it just means posting our points of view and arguments in a respectful and logical manner and thereby effecting changes in the policies that we want/need.

Re: What happened to the edit function? Still not fixed!

The ability to edit posts in the two Intel chipset Skyburg forums is still not fixed--time limit or not!

What does it take to get this corrected?

It is part of my function to delete frivolous or unresponsive posts throughout the website. I am not going to be drawn into a nasty exchange of disrespect with any member. Certainly this forum can hardly afford to lose any members, least of all seniors who have contributed here for a long time. After years of administrating websites I have heard all the arguments and have had to stand my ground against unreasonable or disgruntled members. I will only converse with those possessing the reason and temperament to do so in a respectful manner. If anyone is of the opinion that they cannot participate here so long as the edit function is not set to their satisfaction I can understand that. I simply ask that those discussions we do have going on not be disrupted by angry demands the staff here (including myself) is powerless to address.

11 posts complaining about it in less than a week doesn't seem to do much good. Patience is a virtue.

Maico, I am confused, I simply asked that the edit functon be fixed as it was before. You are arbitarily arguing that it should not be more than 24 hours when many do not agree with you--so we have differences here, but that is not the main point.

You said "11 posts complaining about it in less than a week doesn't seem to do much good. Patience is a virtue." I have posted again, because, it appeared that (from your replies and privqte messages that it would be fixed, but after several days that has not happened... I don't want to beat a dead horse, but what does it take to fix a relatively minor issue?

Whether it is 24 hours or longer at this point I have some questions 1. Can the edit function be turned back on (REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE LIMIT IS)? Do you or the staff have the power to do so? 3. If it can be fixed, why has it not been? I am trying to be patient, what is a resonable time line to correct this problem?

Can you please provide sone clarity to the situation.

In this forum, but NOT in the Skyburg forums--only some forums have edits now and some have time limits.
