Are you saying the yellow wire should have gone to the MB AND the fan contoller? Interesting. I will have to re-try this.

Tornado fans not that great?!

i'm saying that you have to split the ground into two wires so that it goes to BOTH the fan controller AND motherboard

The XP120 still sits in the box for another day when I can strip down my system for some mods. So when I have the board out I will give the xp120 a go - otherwise it will look cool as a paper weight - lol.

Hi Nef - so in summary you need to:
  • cut the red (pos) wire and hook it into the fan controller +6-12v (should not stay connected to the mobo)
  • split the black (neg) so that it stays with the mobo and hooks into the fan controller's ground
  • Don't touch the yellow (speed sensor) wire
Did I sum it up right?

yup that should do it.

Try it with just the RPM wire on the mobo and the black and red on the fan controller first. For some reason it works with just the RPM wire on some fans and doesnt on others. If you find that it doesnt work, then add the ground to the mobo as well as the fan controller.

Awesome. Man you Ontario guys know your stuff! I'll have to give this another try when I have a chance.
Well Snafu, Nefarious...it's been just dynamite "meeting" you both and I look forward to our paths crossing again. I hope one day to make it back to your province again. I've heard a lot about a place called Muskoka I would just love to see it one day.
Stay cool.
EDIT: Nefarious..."Skule Sucks" HAHA, I love it!

We love it when folks come visit Muskoka. All the bugs head for fresh meat and leave us native folk alone

If you come before August bring lots of bug repellant or some extra blood for transfusions. May usually brings out the black flies. June is reserved for mosquitoes. July is the heavy hitter month for deer flies and horse flies. These things can take chunks of flesh off you and known to carry away small pets! Just kidding about the later part.

By August it usually slows down enough to enjoy the outdoors.

I do not have a meter so can't measure the 80mm I have. Mine are modded so they are definitely not oyur typical SilenX fans.

HAHAHA, sorry to disappoint Snafu but I'm way ahead of you. I met someone who moved out here from Ajax, ON. He used to work as a park ranger I think in Northern Ontario during the summer months. He's already told me the horror stories about the flies. I also work with someone from Winnipeg who talks about the "Horseflies" you mention. Those things sound painful.
If I did come out it would be in September so I guess you will have to swat your own flies.

AJAX!!!! I live in Ajax :P not a great place to live, but REALLY quiet.

fvbounty: I got the 120mm SilenX 14dB fan and it isn't as good as it claims. I dont know enough about sound to judge, but it is definately not 14dB. at 5v i doubt it is 5db. What do you need the fan for? If you are using it with a XP-120, then the orange nexus is a great fan to use. No need to put it on a rheobus becasue it doesn't spin that fast the begin with. ~1000RPM. if its for a case fan then the nexus is great as well. Some people get too caught up in the notion that you need a windtunnel to have sufficent cooling. As long as you cover up the portions where air leaks from, and you have relatively good cable management, then a low RPM fan over the hadddrives and an exhaust fan will be sufficent. you dont need to have 10 tornados to have sufficent cooling. I used to think that way, but was sadly mistaken when my hearing started to go :P

Silverstone Temjin TJ03B, is a pretty nice case. is it two 80mm exhaust and 1 120mm intake? Would be better to get all 120mm fans in there, but for 80mm fans. Look for the nexus or the panaflo L1A. THey are both pretty good fans.

That's is what i have, 120mm intake, 120mm sidepanel intake, 120mm blowhole exhaust, 2x80mm exhaust, the 120mm Coolermaster is 42cfm on the intakes and exhaust at 22dba, I was just looking for a little more cfm's for sidepanel to blow in on my 6800gt's to help cool the upper card in sli (62C at idle, bottom card 54C ), thanks for the reply....

Here's something. I have this A7V8x-X for my son in law. During lunch break today I applied AS5 to the cpu (Barton 2500+) I opened music match and 5 IE windows and 10 FF and 10 windows explorers. It worked at 53C. Ambient was 32C. I left it on for about 1 hour. Tonight at an ambient of 28C and just idle with nothing opened it was at 56C. I renoved the cpu and what do you know. AS5 GONE. Core was almost clean as if just removed from package. Heat sink clean!!. So I have since applied Manhattan Termal Grease. It has been on with all the same windows/programsas above for half an hour and steady at 42C. Bios says 41C. What happened with AS5? This is the third time on four different pc's including my p4c800, a pentium 3 600, and my A7N8X that the Manahattan works better/cools than than AS5. Is this for real? I am not yet convinced about AS5. Since I started typing this is has now dropped to 40C several times. MB is steady at 37C. With the AS5 MB was at 41C...??

I''ve never had problems with AS5. My temps are generally pretty good. I got about 50C under load with my 3.0C @245FSB with a SIlenX and XP-120. Since then I have it at 225FSB and my temps are at 40C under load (probably due to the reversed air flow in my case). I set up a barton for my cousin a while ago. I don't thin kthat it produced that much heat. Are you sure it's all gone? maybe you just applied very little and when it compressed under the retention force, it just make the layer really really thin.

56C is kinda hot for idle.
