Best Northwood Cooler (Air)

Per my sig, what is the best present day air cooler for a nothwood (socket 478)?

Also, my temps with my o/c in my sig run around 36 idle and 49 full load. Is this the norm for a Northy at O/C?

Thanks.

Your temps are pretty standard. I am not sure how much better you are going to do compared to the CNPS7700-Cu, definitely not going to be worth the $$$ as you may get a few degrees here or there, but nothing big.

If you really want to get cooler, you may want to consider water or a promie.

I believe my load temp creeped up from around 47 to about 52 only because the cooler fins are loaded with dust. I plan on doing a good case cleaning in the next few days. What is considered the possible danger point for a Nothwood at full load?

I'm pretty sure the danger point isn't until you get into the 80's or 90's. It is up there. That isn't exactly ideal, but these things can deal with quite a bit of heat before damage occurs.

80's and 90's ?????? the northwood will throttle down at around 70 C ....your temps are perfectly normal ...a good case cleaning will help some and is good to do at least twice a year. I know man, have one....

There is a difference between the maximum normal operating temperature and the temperature at which you will physically damage the processor (which was the question). Personally, anything above 50 degreees would have me cleaning and reapplying thermal goup and reseating the heatsink, but that is just me.

Yeah a good stopping point will be at 50c. I have a Thermaltake big typhooy with a fan replaced with silverstone fm121 fan producing around 110cfm, pair with a 3.4c northwood overclock to 3.8 with a idle degree of 30c and loan is not bigger that 40c. If you consider getting a good cooler, water cooling will be good and for the extrem a vaporchill will get the load temp below 0c and idle temp will be something around -20c. Air cooling and water cooling is about the same depend on your room temp. However, water will get the heat away faster than air. That's about it for cooling I think

Zalman 7700Cu is good but I started having reboot issues gaming on my P4C800E Deluxe system running a Prescott 3.2 @ 3.8. using this cooler. I also found I was not OCCT stable on the torture test anymore. I lowered the OC twice over afew months and decided to upgrade the cooler to a Zalman CNPS9500 AT and I'm back up to 3.8Ghz OCCT stable and no more reboots. Too lazy to check the temps however

The CNPS9500 AT is for socket 775 but I didn't want to get the CNPS9500 LED which supports 478 becauseof higher cost and didn't want the LED's. However I was able to install the CNPS9500AT using brackets from the 7700Cu and all is good. BTW the fan conector on the CNPS9500 AT has four wires instead of 3 ... the last one is not required on a 478 system.

Got a decent price on a Zalman CNPS9500 LED CPU Cooler at zipzoomfly. $47.99, which included shipping. I couldn't resist.
