Cool CPU, hot MB! :o

Hey I just installed asus probe II

Shows that my CPU is at 26 degrees when idle
While my motherboard is up at 42 degrees idle! :o

How much heat can the MB take before I should start thinking of a way to cool it more?

Strange. The CPU is usually 5-10'C hotter than the MB. What type of CPU cooler are you running?

Have you checked the temperature reading in your BIOS? How do they compare? The ASUS probe may be inacurate.

Have you tried Motherboard Monitor to compare?

42'C is not too hot for a motherboard. If it were in the 60-70 range I would be concerned.

I think chances are it's a glitch in one of the sensors. Even if it isn't though, I wouldn't worry about it. 42 is a little hot for my taste but it definitely shouldn't hurt anything. You could try adding more fans like I have, but I guess it's all a balance between your computer being warm and silent or cool and sounding like a Harley Davidson. Unless of course you can afford silent cooling components. If it's a sensor glitch it should show up the same in the BIOS.

Are you running both rear fans in the P180?

If so, I'd agree with Pasch that the sensor sounds a bit wonky. Two 120mm fans even at 7V will be enough to ventilate the P180. Heck, even one 120mm exhaust fan will do just fine. The 120mm one on the Scythe will help too.

I wouldn't worry.

Even at 42C I would not worry about it. My 875P has been running at scorching 70C for the past couple of months and no problem from running that high

Yeah I am running all fans in my case! running the lowest one on "L" mode and the other 2 on "M".

I got my scythe fan blowing air upwards outta the case! U guys might be right on the sensor thingy. Although my MB is consistantly on 41 degrees, even when I play games and such and pressure it somewhat!

I checked BIOS, it states the same as ASUS probe II. So, is the MB really that hot or is it a glitch? :o if it is a glitch, how did it occur? Is it likely that it came like that from the factory or might I have caused some dmg? Is it worth havin the MB returned/checked out?

I dont believe the CPU is that cool, so yes its a glitch. (unless your room temp is about 5).

You may need to reload BIOS defaults, but you need advice from someone who has that board and is familiar with it.

Sounds resonable, however I was checkin out the BIOS, I found a function that is "Optimized for a 3-pin fan" (just like mine) I changed to that but then RPM got way lower than now and the CPU temp was increasing. After the reboot I got a message stating that there was a "CPU fan error" so I descided to switch back. I have no idea how this stuff works, maybe then I got the "actual results"?

What is room temp? It was 78 F last night and my chipset temp (idle) was 42 C. (P5B-Del) and my CPUs (q6600 @ 9x333) were: 34,34,32,32.

My room temp is standard! The usual 19 - 21 C I'd say.

In that case, you may not have very efficient air flow within the case as others have pointed out.... lots of cords in the way or lots of dust on your HS?

Yeah there are some coords in the way but I mean, they are all necessary and I have tried to install them in the best way possible. As for dust there is almost none. It is a brand new system and the little dust I've found I've cleaned out already.

Well, is there a heat source near the sensor [your video board maybe] that's heating it up? Do you have a non-powered video board or a non-3D board you can slap in there and test this out?
