Replacing that "modelling clay" on the EVGA 680i

I've been reading reviews of the EVGA 680i for months now and pretty much every one recommends removing the chipset coolers and replacing the thick layer of crap under there with something like Arctic Silver 5.

I just got my 680i last week and sure enough there is about the volume of a pea on each chip oozing all over the sides and 1/4" out onto the PCB. I am definitely replacing it with something, but I was wondering: Has anyone done this and what were your results?

Thanks!

UPDATE: Replaced thick gunk on both chips with a thin layer of Arctic Silver 5 and north bridge stays at a cool 22-25 degrees C. Never even turned it on with the "clay' so whether or not replacing it improved performance is unknown. What is known is that what I did definitely didn't hurt anything.
