What I meant by that is I had heard that the way to store it is to put it vertically with the cap side down. As mentioned in this thread the heavy particles would migrate due to gravity and thus be in the servicing end of the tube next time it is used.

The refrigerater idea sounds interesting. Would it chill and solidify the thermal substance enough to defeat any migration of the thermal particles?

When I went from Arctic Silver to Arctic Silver 5 I saw a 3c temp., drop. I would replace old TIM with AS 5.

Cheers!

I think it would help to prevent it from liquefying and breaking-up into its constituent parts. Dunno if it would solidify it though, it always comes out as a paste when I take it out of the fridge.

I don't know about migration of particles, but I keep my AS5 in a little plastic bag taped to the side of my file cabinet such that the dispensing end (cap side) faces down.

Re: Which thermal paste is best

AS Ceramique or the MX-2 that's been linked to. Maybe track down some Innovation Cooling IC Diamond 7 Carat Thermal Compound, which looks promising.

Re: Which thermal paste is best

Tried the MX-2...but I am back using the ARCTIC silver 5

MX-2 looks very thin, when I took my cooler of to install my new E8500

Thinner in comparison with Silver 5...true ??

Re: Which thermal paste is best

Given proper flatness of the mating surfaces, I'd have to say that thinner is typically better when it comes to thermal transfer.

And if someone's producing a thermal compound from diamond, that would certainly be worth a look. IIRC, diamond is an outstanding thermal conductor... though I imagine it will also be a bit pricier as well!!!

I had to change a CPU on a friend's computer a year and a half ago. All I had lying around for thermal paste at that time was what was left over in a tube of Arctic Silver II that I had bought in 2001.

A year and a half later, his temps and his CPU are fine.
