USB Drive Fan Overkill

After a couple of months of fighting with an overheated 300g IDE drive in a cheapo USB enclosure, I figured I'd either farkle up a fan or chuck the enclosure.... Since the enclosure is pretty much useless I decided to butcher it....

Here's the pile of parts I started with..

Presto!! It's ugly, but it's absolutely cold to the touch... I've left the end off until I get some rubber feet for the bottom so the air can exit down....
The other benifit of this, is I can tell when the drive is on (the little blue LED is about the most useless indicator I've ever seen....

Looks good, i think my Vantec Nexstar3 needs the same treatment, it gets really hot with no airflow and a 7200RPM drive!

I think they missed the boat on these, nice aluminum case, but they didn't mount the drive solidly to the metal allowing the case to work as a big heat sink...Instead the drive is mounted to the PCB board....Silly ..

same here, but for me its putting a 120mm fan in the side of my HP. I want to get a hole saw, but its $30 for a one time use thing, not worth it.

We have a selection that I get to borrow from work....But if you don't have a drill press I wouldn't try a 4 1/2 hole saw, you can really make a mess and likely get hurt... Take the side cover to a sheetmetal place, I bet you get it done pretty cheap there..
