Exclamation XP-90c... defective?

Hello everyone,

I just received my XP-90c from coolerguys. Upon inspection, I noticed that there are a lot of little "dots" on the base. When I run my finger over it, the base is very smooth, but I can still feel them. Check the picture I've included. Is it defective? I hope not, because return shipping and more waiting is a *****.

Thanks for your help!

-Paul

Red face Those are minor surface imperfections.

This can probably be fixed with some 600 grit or better sand paper. It won't take much, but I'd see what they say first. As long as there aren't any that stick up over the CPU. It should be nice and easy to fix.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply!

I ordered a lapping kit from easypckits. It should arrive any day now. Looks like good stuff! Not expensive either. We'll see how it goes.

I 've lapped new heatsinks even when they hadn't got pits in them.

I liked them having a shiny bottom-plate that makes good and easy thermal contact with the CPU die, certainly for the K7 family processors !

Don't rub too hard, just a lot and grab the heatsink close to the base, otherwise it will start leaning over and you get a rounded base, not a level/straight one.

NOTE: the copper is rather soft, so it laps well.

Very good advice. Smooth even strokes or you may concave the plane.

Lightbulb Ok... results...

Hello again!

Well, everything is set up. I don't have the puictures now, it's on the other hard drive somewhere. However, i was working on it for over two hours, and some of those damn holes remain. Oh well. It's mostly shiny.

I mounted the heatsink with the heatpipes down. Temps are approx. 24 idle at 2480mhz. 35 max under prime95.

SanDiego 3700+ (stock 2.2ghz). Multiplier at 10x. FSB 248. LDT x4. DFI Ultra-D. Arctic Silver 5.

I had a PCToys 92mm Tornado fan mounted on the XP-90C, but that thing is like a hairdryer on MAX! Unbearable without a fan controller. So, I bought an Aerocool Gatewatch. Connectors don't match. I'll strip the wires later. For now, I removed the side intake 92mm from my new Tsunami case and put it on the heatsink. What a world of difference.

Once I connect the tornado to the fan controller, temps should be a little lower.

Oh, and I just finished tweaking my Kingmax ddr500 memory. I'll post the results with pics in the memory section.

Thanks for all your help again!

If you connect that Tornado between +12V and +5V, it runs on 7 Volts, that could be bearable (for the ears).
I 've used that trick in the PC for a doctor that needed to stay silent; I had to replace the fan on the PIII cooler and found only a hefty model with the right dimensions but thicker.
It would have made too much noise at 12 Volts, so I connected it like above and it was SILENT, yet had more CFM than the original thinner fan.

That made for a well pleased client !

If it was that pitted, I would have sent it back to where it came from.
That 's aweful !

Thumbs down

I can't use 7v because the fan controller has male 3pin connectors. The Tornado (along with the other fans in the Tsunami case) have 4pin molex power connectors, and female 3pins for the rpm monitoring (yellow wire). Not good. I'll buy some 3pin extension cables and cut and strip them together with the fans. That's the best that I can think of right now.

-Paul

Oh, and I didn't want the hassle of sending it back... and thought that lapping it would help. Oh well. Maybe 400-grit sandpaper would have been better.

You can always use 7 Volts; you just have to get or buy a 4-pin Y cable and switch around the +5 and +12 connections on 1 of the connectors.
You also have to mark it well so you don't get accidents later when you should change things ...
It 's not that difficult to fre the pins from the plastic body of the connector and put them in another hole again.
I did so a couple of times already.
You can even do that witha 4- to 3-pin cable on the 4-pin side.
