Re: ATI Radeon 4800 launch details

Fudzilla

"ATI's soon to be launched dual slot Radeon HD 4870 will score 12600 on a Q6600 based system. We are talking about default 1280x1024 3Dmark06 score.

Radeon HD 4850 scores around 11300 in the same benchmark at same settings and if you get the resolution to 1920x1200 and use 8X FSAA the score drops to 7200 points. Radeon HD 4870 scores 9000 at these settings in 3Dmark06 and 7700 points in 3Dmark Vantage default settings.

Radeon 4850 scores 6400 in 3Dmark Vantage default settings and it drops to 3680 points when you crank up the resolution to 1920x1200 and turn the anisotropic on. Radeon 4870 scores close to 4600 points at these settings.

Overall Radeon 4870 look 10 to 20 percent faster than the GDDR3 based 4850 and you should even get playable scores at Crysis at 1920x1200, but of course No AA."

12,600 isn't too bad when you consider the CPU is a 2.66GHz part. It should jump higher at around 3GHz. The HD 4850 is getting around 2000 points higher than my old 8800GTS 640. I might end up getting the 4850 instead. We will see actual benchmarks and plenty of comparisons to other cards around Tuesday of next week.

Re: ATI Radeon 4800 launch details

My goodness!!!

That's just not bad at all....

Certainly not GX 280 like....

But for the price.....
less heat
less noise
smaller physical size
AND----it will work fine with a 500W PSU

I'm a thinkin' I'm a goin' that route.....

Maybe I "upgun" that workstation Rig I just built with a 9850 Black Phenom and 8 gigs of memory with one of these....

and keep my trusty GTX 8800.....

Then I could play games on EITHER rig....

My wife will just LOVE that!!!

The 4870 should handle AA much better because of the higher bandwidth from the GDDR5 memory - so Fudzilla may be a bit off here (unless they've already tested it).

Re: ATI Radeon 4800 launch details

At 3GHz I should get around 2500 points higher with the HD 4850 than my current card, have better features and IQ, and use about 60W less power. I am getting over a hundred dollars for the old 8800GTS so this will be a cheap upgrade.

You can forget about the ATI HD 4870 beating the NVidia 9800GTX.

Fudzilla - 9800GTX to get a new performance driver

Good move on NVidia's part.

You are right, I meant to say 8 or 9 series, not 7 series.

Re: ATI Radeon 4800 launch details

Sapphire Toxic 4850 available soon. This will probably be the card I get in 2-3wks. Don't know yet how big the cooler is (dual slot maybe?) I hope it is bigger than the Toxics 3870's cooler but I am not worried if it blows out the back or not. I just ordered an Antec 300 case to handle temps. I am on a slow roll with upgrading my system and just missed purchasing the VelociRaptor for $269. I will be getting one of those soon to.

"The Sapphire HD 4850 Toxic is listed with a price tag set at €177,38. This makes it the highest priced HD 4850 card with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, but if the cooler is anything like the one on the Sapphire HD 3870 Toxic card then Sapphire might have a winner on their hands."

Fudzilla - Sapphire's Toxic HD 4850 card listed

Interesting Article....

If I owned a 9800GTX I'd either be upset that they didn't have this to begin with----or elated----probably both.....

But first they actually have to PRODUCE said driver----not just talk about it or leak little innuendo's to breathless web sites like the "Fud".....

And then we have to see just how well it does and how stable it really is....

And prices of 9800GTX---the fast ones anyway----are in the $250 price range (which is what the ATI card will gravitate to ultimately)

So------I'm thinking ATI still has a bit of an "edge" here regardless...

Newer tech---does more----DDR5---price is right---yada---yada---yada

Isn't it wonderful to see this all play out.....

ATI has gotten Nvidia's ATTENTION again!!!

I LOVE IT!

And guess who benefits----that be us......
