| HDMI aims for more transparency Sunnyvale (CA) - HDMI Licensing, the group behind high definition multimedia interface specifications, today announced a new specification and licensing standard for high-def devices, which aims to make the features of HDMI devices more transparent. HDMI has essentially become the universal platform for high definition video delivery, but receiving approval to use the HDMI logo and trademark has been relatively ambiguous. According to new rules set by HDMI licensing, manufacturers will now have to add not only the version number to their HDMI sticker, but also certain optional features that are supported by the device. | Re: HDMI aims for more transparency Yeah that's good I think. Like with my laptop that has a HDMI port, nowhere did it say whether it supported audio or not so I was wondering what was going on. Turns out it does not, but would have been nice if that was documented somewhere.

| Re: HDMI aims for more transparency So I found out. I didn't know much of anything a little over a year ago about HDMI so again it would have been nice to have had a little documentation.

| Re: HDMI aims for more transparency That depends, doesn't it? I mean, ATi has cards with inbuilt audio processing and the ability to push video+audio through a HDMI connection. I love how we'll have analog, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort (and possibly UDMI or whatever it's called). A variation on the "Format Wars!" theme. Peachy.

| In the computer field, it looks like they are skipping over HDMI and moving to DisplayPort. Dell is moving it's monitors to Displayport not HDMI. |

In a way, it's still a shame, since it'd been nicer with a ubiquitous port for all video needs (and with a profile for video/audio). But HDMI has a hefty license fee and a "chip tax", and I guess the consortium doesn't really care about stuff beyond TV connectivity.
