Intel to pay AMD $1.25-billion, settle all disputes

Chip makers Intel Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc said they have settled all outstanding legal disputes, including antitrust litigation and patent licensing issues.

Intel to pay AMD $1.25-billion, settle all disputes

I gues they will also have a lot less lawyer costs :-)
AMD could have had much more but stability and a certain future is also very valuable for AMD now.

Wow, that's some serious dosh

I hope it helps AMD get back on track, they are just too far behind. Global Foundries will have a 32nm process available mid year 2010 and AMD doesn't have anything in 32nm that will tape out till 2011

First bulldozer samples are on schedule begin next year.
So maybe end 2010 otherwise begin 2011

Also I saw bulldozer will fit in an AM3 motherboard, although they can still change their mind.
(assuming they provide a bios update)

Still looking like 2011 to me:
AnandTech: AMD Unveils Bulldozer & Bobcat: 2011 Microachitectures

I sure do hope that Bulldozer will finally match Intel in the Quad core+ enthusiast desktop sector.

CNBC had an Arab Sheik from Aba Dabi who now owns 25% of AMD and a Mfg. plant is being built there to make AMD processors. This could help AMD to become price competitive.

Hmm, I knew they (Global Foundries) was building a plant in NY, but Abu Dhabi (UAE) - I hadn't heard that.

Re: Intel to pay AMD $1.25-billion, settle all disputes

And the lawyers all cried for at least a week.........more like a YEAR!

This is HUGE.

AMD gets some cash....

Intel doesn't have to deal with the wrangling and legal fees.....or possible trade injunctions and anti-trust legalities....

I guess Intel took a look at legal fees and what it was going to cost them in the long run and found out they would be MUCH MORE than just settiling with AMD and giving them a boatload of cash....

Sobering----about how much "the law" costs.

What was it Shakespeare said: "First thing we do is kill all the lawyers!"

Interesting.....

And while AMD is behind in processors----their onboard video is much better than Intel's and with ATI----they may truly be on the way to CONVERGANCE and a larger role in the world's biggest market which is simple computers with on board video.

No wonder AMD's stock jumped!

Re: Intel to pay AMD $1.25-billion, settle all disputes

Actually John,

I think that Intel looked around at all the global lawsuits (where fines could potentially have cost Intel upwards up 10B USD). So, Intel settled with AMD for chump change** to quiet AMD (IMO) and put an end to most of the lawsuits. Legal fees, from one analyst I watched) said that they'd potentially run into several hundred million dollars.

I think Intel made out well, though the EU has already slapped Intel hard and Intel isn't likely to win the appeal (though the fines will probably be reduced). The EU needs to save face on this one.

** Chump change for the behemoth Intel. A decent chunk of change for AMD.

Re: Intel to pay AMD $1.25-billion, settle all disputes

Exactly------they actually get out of this paying 'chump change"....

And AMD gets some needed cash....

Everybody wins!!

Except the lawyers.....

And Nvidia----whom I really believe are going to stuggle in a few years...

Hope I'm wrong!
