Intel to release faster quad core chip

IN THE THIRD quarter of 2008, Intel will apparently be releasing its Q9650 Core 2 Quad processor, which has similar specs to the current high-end "Extreme" QX9650, but will cost almost half the price.
The report, which originally appeared on HKEPC, a Chinese Web site, said that the new Q9650 would cost $530, compared to $999 which a high-end "Extreme" QX9650 would set you back.
The specs of the two processors are purportedly fairly similar, with 12MB of cache memory, clock speeds of 3GHz and a 1333MHz front-side bus.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The Q9550 was introduced months ago, and is still almost impossible to buy:

Re: Intel to release faster quad core chip

I got my hands on a Q9450 last week at Fry's on sale for $279.99 with NO regrets. They are gonna phase out the Q9450 in favor of the Q9400, which has half the cache...glad I got the chip when I did. The difference in speed between the Q9450 and Q9550 is negligable...so I feel confident having made the right move. Looks like Intel is gonna cut corners...the new chips will almost all contain less cache.

Not sure what CPU to go to next. I was planning on a quad but I might still go with a Wolfdale to lesson the heat. At least there are plenty of choices to consider and availability coming in Q3 with a price drop.

Found this if anyone's interested

Micro Center Online - Intel® Boxed Core 2 Quad Processor Q9450

Problem I have with the new processors in Q3 is that Intel cut the L2 cache in half...not too impressed...the Q9450 and Q9550 will be worth their weight in gold for now

Re: Intel to release faster quad core chip

I want cooler ones. Like a Q9450 but at 55W or so. Dammit. And maybe a G45 chipset that doesn't suck in terms of graphics and HD decoding. Then Intel would be offering something I really want.

Very nice
What are your CPU temps with what cooler and how's the new Creative card? Are you using the front port module with headphones?

Re: Intel to release faster quad core chip

The only temps I have tracked is that the chip as a whole idles around 30C and loads at no higher than 42C. As for the X-fi...it is the first generation one...not the new one. I have Logitech speakers with built in headphone module in the volume box...so I don't use the front port of my case...BUT...I have had NO issues with this card and Creative's drivers in Vista Home Premium
