As Intel Surges, PC Makers Prop Up Its Main Competitor

"But how close are we to a world dominated by one chipmaker?

Not very, say most industry analysts. In fact, Intel is actually much less of a monopoly threat today than it was previously, thanks largely to the cyclical nature of the x86 processor business -- and the paranoia of computer manufacturers who don't want to see a world where a single chipmaker calls all the shots."

Re: As Intel Surges, PC Makers Prop Up Its Main Competitor

I've read many AMD fans say they will buy the Phenom just to help keep AMD in business. I am sure there are PC building co.'s out there that will do the same. Sounds like charity to me. Even though I would stick with Intel if they had inferior performance CPU's it would not be for charity, it would be because of their superior quality, stability, and support of their products.

The PC makers are hardly doing this out of charity. They know what a monopoly can do to them (they've already ready been though it b/4 w/Intel and Microsft). It's a business decision, plain and simple.

I will go with whoever is best--and I interpret that as having the best performance in the middle of the price range. (No extreme edition anything for me, and no "cheapo" either.) Anyway, of my last 5 builds, 2 have been AMD and 3 were Intel. Actually, the chipset is almost as important in the selection process as the processor.

I do about the same (well, some overclocking ability matters too). But that's different than the calculus of large corporate PC makers.

You would stick with Intel even though they had inferior performance, but because they had superior quality? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. If you compare the AMD64s to say the prescott days, I would say AMD had both down. My FX/57 has been rock solid running constantly for over 2 years now. I have had no stability problems. In fact I still have 3 different XP series chips that are going strong after 5 years. I actually wish that AMD had something to offer right now as to have to think about it...but they don't. My next machine will be Intel based of course. I do not control the market or tech achievements and will buy the best I can no matter who is making it. I cannot afford "charity". Especially not to multi-billion dollar empires.

You bet I would, I wouldn't consider any other board than an Intel chipset board for their quality, dependability, and support.

Back on topic, I found this about AMD bringing back K8 chips next year.
DailyTech - AMD Resurrects K8 Architecture for 2008 Roadmap

I kinda feel AMD will have a chance to play catch up with Phenom because I see quad core as being sort of a finish line for the home desktop. Intel I believe is pushing 8-core back a year (32nm Gesher) due to TDP. Who needs more than four cores at home?

I'm running both in my fleet

However, since AMD has dropped the 939 socket, I have not built another AMD since ...

I'm into low power computing these days ... here is what I have been playing with all week running Linux Mint 4.0. It's build with a new Intel D201GLY2 mini itx mobo and cpu combination ...

Yeah, looks kind of like a last minute thing, considering Brisbane's L2 cache was slowed down so that the cache size could be enlarged, but hasn't been. I'm kind of surprised that Brisbane isn't being clocked above 2.9GHz by now. It's not that bad really, their large OEM customers (HP, etc) will love the cheap, low power 65nm X2s.
