Re: Internet Explorer 8 (final) released

I put it on my XP and Vista 64 boxes. So far, it's a keeper on both, but my default browser is still Firefox.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 (final) released

How's adding a bookmark to Favourites like? When IE7 was released, I liked it except for the weird bookmark change. Everytime I wanted to add a bookmark and I opened Favourites, every folder was opened by default and I had a very long list to scroll through which took forever. I took me about 3 times longer to add a bookmark with IE7 then with IE6. I went through menu system and couldn't find a way to change it (to have each Favourites folder closed by default). Because of this one thing - I switched back to IE6. I wanted to know if IE8 has the same problem with Favourites before I switch.

Are you using the 32 or 64 bit version or both?

Not sure if this is what you are asking, but I get a dialogue box with a simple list of folders when I click add to favorites.

when you add a Favorite it doesn't have its own separate folder...it just gets put in a list...which you have to scroll to pick out which Fav you want...don't quite understand your question as it's been a long time since I've used IE6 and I don't even remember the differences from IE6 to IE7/8...I guess you could put each Fav into its own separate folder but it seems much easier the way it is by default

Re: Internet Explorer 8 (final) released

When I click on the Add button in the Favourites section, a small window opens up (Add Favourite) - this lists my parent Favourite directory which has 17 current folders. Under IE6, these are closed and I navigate through the sub-folders to where I want to add the new bookmark (I have to click on a folder to open it). Under IE7 - every single folder (in the entire Favourites directory tree) is already opened, displaying a large window which I have to scroll through. Just to add one new bookmark took me 3 times as long, as I had to scroll through this massive list of opened sub-folders. It drove me nuts to the point where I switched back to IE6.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 (final) released

I just had a BSOD occur as I was typing an address into IE8... never had that happen before. I'm sending a report to M$ about it... may be just a co-incidence but this system is usually 100% stable...

Re: Internet Explorer 8 (final) released

I just installed IE8 - it's sort of ok. I hate that I can't configure the buttons the way I want like in IE6 AND the favourites problem IS STILL THERE. I add a favourite and the pop up window EXPLODES every single favourites folder open making a large window from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. I thinking about going back to IE6!!!!

Re: Internet Explorer 8 (final) released

I just noticed something weird with IE8. I have my task manager opened and when I start IE8, taskmanger list 2 copies of IE8 running, and there's only one browser window on desktop. If I kill one in task manager, they both get deleted. If I'm browsing and I click on a link, a second IE8 window appears, yet in task manager now lists that there is 3 IE8's running. What's going on?????

Also after I installed IE8, I now get ctfmon.exe running in the background. I uncheck it using msconfig, yet it always loads at start up. I kill it in task manager and about 1 minute later it's back. I googled it and found how to get rid of it. This wasn't running before I installed IE8. IE8 - nothing but problems.

IE8 finally showed up for me today under Windows Update...Microsoft apparently did a staggered release of Windows Update IE8 which started last week...debating whether to install it now or wait a bit longer...although I like IE8 for the most part there are certain tiny things that bug me about it

I gave IE8 another whirl and I like it...the Accelerators are very helpful and make surfing the web even faster (by a few mouse clicks anyway)...I didn't see the point of them initially when I tried the beta and RC but now after playing around with them for an extended period it really has become invaluable...especially if more companies develop Accelerators then it can get even better...the Google accelerator is my most used one at the moment but I can see myself using the MapQuest one and Ebay one as well...and it really does make things easier rather then the old method of having to copy/type things into the Google toolbar

who says MS cannot be innovators anymore?...IE8 proves they still have a few tricks up their sleeves

I also tried very hard to find some sites that were broken with IE8 and could not do it...I went to the official list of broken IE8 sites that came out with the Release Candidate but every site I entered seems to now work fine in IE8 (most of the sites on that list were foreign URL's---mostly Chinese websites)

MS also changed the behavior of the 'Compatibility View' function where it now automatically turns on this feature if it detects a site does not work properly under IE8...Ive only turned this on for testing prurposes and have not found any actual sites that do not work under IE8

I was able to change the layout to look like IE7 which was very important to me...got rid of all the History crap and other junk in the Address Bar and also expanded it to show 24 URL's (like IE7 does) and not the default 12...only thing that bugs me is that scrolling up or down within the address bar is not as quick as IE7...there seems to be some kind of hitch/slight delay which is annoying

all in all a big step up for Internet Explorer without even mentioning the rendering speed and security improvements...IE8 looks like a winner
