Microsoft Claims Vista Counterfeit Rate is Half that of XP

Microsoft internal metrics show Vista piracy rate about half that of XP

Windows with all its faults and problems is still the most popular computer operating system around. That also means it is one of the most pirated operating systems around.
Piracy of the Windows operating system is so rampant that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced in February of this year that piracy was to blame for slow Vista sales. Ironically, a month after the piracy is to blame for slow sales announcement; Microsoft came back touting its brisk sales figures for Windows Vista.
By July of 2007, Microsoft had sold 60 million copies of Windows Vista and proudly proclaimed it intended to ship 1 billion copies by 2008. In an effort to stop pirates from selling illegal copies of Vista, Microsoft introduced a reduced functionality mode in September of 2007. The same month Microsoft announced it would downgrade Vista haters to Windows XP.
This week Microsoft announced that its Vista SP1 would directly target users running illegal copies of Vista. Microsoft Corporate vice president of Windows product marketing Michael Sievert said in an interview this week, “While piracy rates are hard to measure precisely, we’re seeing indications from internal metrics, like WGA validation failures, that the Windows Vista piracy rate is less than half that of Windows XP today.”

1. Vista sales are around half of xp sales
2. No real need to upgrade
3. Price

That is why there isnt many pirated copies around. MS needs to get it into there head that here new baby OS isnt selling.

Well you can still get 4gb with xp but you'll only see a max of 3.25gb. I noticed a few companies like dell, hp and gateway offer 3gb as a option.

MS Windows SP3 will not even attempt to address this. This issue isn't something that can be addressed by the service pack.

The 750MB lost is due to a requirement for the system to have a segment of addresses to access system resources in a 32 bit architechture. Moving to a 64 bit architechture will move this address space to a higher limit, significantly higher. It is still there, just not going to reach it any time soon.

This is just like the 640K "limit" people perceived. There was actually 1MB of memory but the 360K above the 640K limit was reserved for system resources.

That the piracy rate is about half that of XP might be because even the pirates realize what a dog Vista is.

Re: Microsoft Claims Vista Counterfeit Rate is Half that of XP

I always loved to get the latest MS OS running on my system, i like new features and the new look. Ok, MS OSes usually don't come with many new features, but anyways i like it to stay up to date.
The only two times i didn't upgrade where WinME (what a sad OS) and Vista...while vista is significantly better than ME it still looks very much like MEII, as the inquirer loves to call it.

Too bad...

Wait does this mean that if I use Xp 64 bit I can fix this and run my system with Xp and 4 gigs of ram?

All you need is a 64bit OS, that means it doesn't necessary be Vista.
I'll go for XP64 with my new rig, can't wait to see it running

Re: Microsoft Claims Vista Counterfeit Rate is Half that of XP

I forgot how much memory can support in the 64bit os but i know its a lot. If you move to 64bit os need to check for driver support and software. Xp and Vista 32bit read the memory the same so just doing a upgrade isnt going to help unless its 64bit.

Yuppers, just make sure you have a 64 bit processor and the drivers available for the rest of your kit.
