Microsoft Pulls XP SP3, Delays Release Indefinitely

Bad news for those looking to get the latest XP service pack

DailyTech reported earlier today that Windows XP's third service pack was ready for full deployment via Windows Update, as promised by Microsoft. However, in an eleventh hour move sure to draw criticism, the service pack was yanked by Microsoft and will not be released on April 29th as previously promised.

The pack was pulled because it breaks or otherwise compromises the Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS). The RMS application is relatively uncommon and is chiefly used by small/midsize businesses, making Microsoft's decision to pull the pack seem a bit unusual. A Microsoft spokesman released the following statement about the problem

DailyTech - Microsoft Pulls XP SP3, Delays Release Indefinitely
Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Delayed Due to Bug - Tom's Guide

Right. Well I guess I wont run it then.
This other product that broke, RMS, must be using undocumented features of the windows API. Couldnt they have just patched it?

So now we're waiting for SP3.1 right?

Gee...No wonder I couldn't find it on their website.

I wonder, when it is finally released, if MS will publish the number of downloads. I'd like to know just how many "customers" there are...

Re: Microsoft Pulls XP SP3, Delays Release Indefinitely

Well other than the fact that they pulled it at the last second. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I mean it's not like it's some major bug fix like SP1 was (suppose to be)for Vista. I don't even know why they are going to bother at all, since they are suppose to ground XP anyway. Probably forgot to add the new date to the automatic shut down program. Where it will magically turn in to Vista few days later!

I waited to install SP2 until a few months after it was released and was planning to do the same with SP3. I am ready when they are ready (plus a few months).

am I the only person that downloads Windows Update every month?...a Service Pack is mostly a rollup of all previously released updates...who really cares about SP3??...if you have been downloading all the monthly updates then you pretty much have SP3 already...do people really not download any updates then wait for the big service pack to get everything?...SP3 is adding a few additional features not available through Windows Update but even those are not that big of a deal

I don't get the big sense of anticipation from people for SP3...I would think most halfway literate computer users would already have their computers up to date with or without another Service Pack

SP3 is a pretty big thing for those of us that do installs for customers , it saves me slipstreaming all the updates onto my install disks, or giving a customer a computer that isn't up to date.

So new installs aside, it's pretty much worthless? I installed it on the girlfriend's laptop (I figure since I am the only reason it works at all I can do strange and terrible experiments with it if I want ) I can tell no difference with it at all. I didn't play with it that long, but the only way I knew it was installed was it did actually say "service pack 3" in computer management. I don't know... was just bored I guess. No harm done at least (knock on wood)
