Price War Reversed: ATI Increases Pricing

ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, on Monday said that it would increase the price of its ATI Radeon HD 5850 graphics processing unit (GPU) by $20+ due to overwhelming demand...

Story here

Looks like I may need to pick up my new cards this week then if I want to avoid this price hike... I'm considering a pair of 5850's to run in cross fire or waiting for a 5850x2 card... (or whatever it will be called)

I'm operating on the assumption here that adding two cards to my rig will only result in about 3 db of increased noise over just the one card... can anyone here confirm or deny that for me? (i'm not a sound audiophile myself)...
So if one card is outputting around 47 db at load then two would be around 50...

But I expect a x2 card would be quieter than 2 cards... so would be a better solution ... but how long before a 5850x2 comes out?

New dual-GPU ATI Radeon 5970 spotted

Over here they talk about a 5870x2 having been spotted... maybe I should wait for these x2 parts and just wear the extra $$... <sigh>

Hmm, with nVidia behind the 8 ball, I don't blame ATI for raising prices. AMD is in the win column on performance until Fermi makes it out (and it's likely going to miss the important Christmas season).

Re: Price War Reversed: ATI Increases Pricing

I guess I can't blame ATI-----capitalism----the law of supply and demand----etc....

But here is what worries me.....

Nvidia (I think) is becoming LESS able to compete....

And is starting to become the odd man out....

and just WHAT is there long term strategy????

They don't make CPUs----and their onboard stuff lags ATI by a margin...

and in a world where computing is going commonplace to the point that---what is it----like 90% of the worlds computers use onboard video....

Just what are they going to sell?

Seems to me that Intel is fine...
AMD/ATI is fine----and their strategy to combine is starting to make sense and bear fruit...

and Nvidia is in trouble.....Maybe not right now----but less than 3 years from now----they will be in bad shape unless they develop a STRATEGY

We enthusiasts in this forum LOVE video cards------the rest of the world coudn't give a hoot.....

and that's a LOT of folks......

John, I think NVIDIA makes an attractive take-over candidate for Intel. I know this idea got alot of press some time ago (when AMD gobbled up ATI) and was dismissed, but the economics may just make sense now. Intel gets proven GPU technology and NVIDIA gets "a way out".

Just a thought...

Problem is, Intel would like just bury nVidia after buying them, keep some really good engineers, adding to their IP portfolio and then just keep pressing on with their own strategy.

nVidia plans to drive 1/2 their revenue using the Terga platform (The Terga2 w/Arm9 make a pretty potent combo). And they plan on greatly expanding the GPU market starting with Fermi. And they still plan on making a range of video cards. They have the wrong product mix ATM, due to a combination of forecasting errors and the fact that TMSC's yields on 40nm parts have been well below expectations - ***** happens.

I think nVidia will be looking much better in 6 months, at least with regards to their PC video lineup. Unfortunately they are leaving allot of money on the table this holiday season - some of which ATI will be happy to scoop up.

I agree- Not saying that this purchase would be good for consumers (it wouldn't!), just good for Intel.

LOL! Well, since Intel just had to fork over 1.25B USD to AMD I don't think they would be interested in the headache that buying nVidia would be right now.

Oh and FWIW, prices are going up on all nVidia GTX 2xx cards right now as well. Normally prices would be going down, but both ATI and nVidia under-estimated demand.
