Thumbs up PS3 as external H.264 encoder for the PC

This is a bit older news but deserves some attention certainly if you already have a PS3.

Ps3 -- Joystiq [Playstation]
Quote:
Here's another way to harness the power of the PS3's Cell chip. Fixstars Corporation of Japan has announced CodecSys CE-10, the first H.264 encoder that's designed specifically for the PS3
Using the PS3 as an 'add-on' on your PC for your H.264 encoding.

I knew this could be done but I never though someone would invest some money in it.
It will not be freeware but I sure don't mind if it is good and fast.

I was thinking about energy consumption.
Since you need both running but the improvement doesn't have to be that big to have a lower total energy consumption. (PS3=130W, a bit more than a i7 CPU at full load)

If this beats the i7 then I will certainly go for an AMD PC (With the saved money I can buy the software)

Their site: Fixstars
(but the product is not mentioned on it yet, release June)

TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress plug-in yields up to 588% faster processing speed for high definition video encoding. Based on the same Cell processor architecture used in Sony's PS3

(plug-in=4 SPE cores @1.5Ghz, PS3=6 SPE cores @3.2Ghz )

Re: PS3 as external H.264 encoder for the PC

The reason that they invested money in it is because their very expensive (professional >5000$) PCI card (GigaAccel 180) has an next generation processor (PowerXCell™ 8i) on it compared to the PS3.

So they only had to make a 'light' version of the software that they already have and make the connection to the PS3.
So the extra investment to get it on the PS3 isn't very big.
I hope they keep that in mind when they figure out the price

I couldn't find any reaction on the internet of someone who went to see the demo and received an free evaluation disc?!

Spec sheet: http://us.fixstars.com/products/code...0_USletter.pdf

Re: PS3 as external H.264 encoder for the PC

Just to add that there are two versions, Personal and Professional.
Google Vertaling

The only difference is the max bit-rate 15Mbit/sec (excluding audio bit rate) for not commercial use. 150Mbit/sec for the commercial use version.
I think 15Mbit is enough for the average user.

an 14 day trial is available IF you can read Japanese.
Price between 150 and 200 US Dollar or 100-150 Euro (guess, converted from yen)

The commercial version cost about 10 times as much.
(so, no option for most of us)

PC system req. (obviously you also need a PS3)
Dual core, 1.8Ghz.
mem: min. 2GB
OS: XP, Vista
Fast harddrive (RAID preferred)
Gigabit ethernet connecton
USB stick, 5MB free (used to boot PS3 in linux)
