| Sony jacks up the price of Blu-ray SONY appears to have jacked up the price of Blu-ray players now that it has killed off HD-DVD. Tom's Hardware is reporting that Blu-ray disk players from Samsung, Sony and Sharp are the most expensive they have been all year. According to Pricegrabber.com a few months ago the average price for a Blu-ray player was $300. Now it is $400. Within just the last two weeks, the average prices for LG's BH200 player and Sharp's BD-HP20U have climbed significantly. Sony jacks up the price of Blu-ray - The INQUIRER

| Re: Sony jacks up the price of Blu-ray Be nice if there was a way to modify a HD-DVD player to read Blu-Ray. I wonder if the PS3's have gone up as well since they only cost around $400. It's like buy a Blu-Ray player and get a console free!

| Re: Sony jacks up the price of Blu-ray Considering I paid $800 for a high-end standard def Marantz DVD/CD player less than a year ago $400 sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

| Re: Sony jacks up the price of Blu-ray With the loss of HD-DVD, there's only one HD format. Which means someone who dropped a bomb on that 46" 1080P screen, is going to want to put it to good use. Also, obsessive compulsive technology freaks, like most of us here who've gotta have the latest and greatest represent a downward sloping and extremely inelastic demand curve. Sony with it's fresh monopoly on the HD format knows this, and will act exactly like a monopolist. It will produce where it's Marginal Cost of the next unit equals the Marginal Revenue, but artificially reduce the supply to make sure demand far outstrips it and keeping prices high. But people still buy PS3s and Blu-Ray players because of their inelastic demand. If only we'd have been satisfied with DVD. ![]()
