| Warning To All 9700 Owners!!! Hi Just a little warning if like me you want to replace the thermal pad on the sink on your new ATI 9700 pro.The gpu has a ring around it kind of like a shim you put on an Athlon, the thing is the ring is higher than the cpu so you:- WILL NOT GET GOOD CONTACT ON THE CORE Be careful...you need to mod the standard sink or mod another one so that the original can be replaced for RMA if needed. This is very important as the card will not run 3d at stock due to heat and you may damage your windows install and your new card. |

| the standard pad is the pink stuff you find on heatinks when you first buy them..I decided I wanted to replace this with ASII but the ring around the core is higher than the core its self so the sink does not touch the core...it is raised by a few thou |

| Bigtoe, I admire your courage to mod a 400$ vid card, but thats the price that you pay when you make a "new discovery" .

| He isn't going to mod the card and void the warranty...once he discovered that the stock cooling is failing he decided to make his own heatsink for it to get better contact... Others will be having this problem too - now they may have some advanced warning so they don't burn up their cards... I could see this easliy turning into a batch of RMA's...

| I first noticed something was odd when i couldn't clock the core any higher than 340, as on the Annand review of the gigabyte version they had it upto 400 no problem.I touched the back of the card and it was very hot so I decided to try to improve the stock cooling by applying AS2 and replacing the 5 ish cfm standard fan with a 60mm ystech.Thing is the sink does not even touch the core.I did try the card with the AS2 and fan but it would crash out of 3d so I decided to Investigate further and so I posted a warning. | That's what I was wondering about. So it would seem that there could be a batch of these with an improperly mounted hs... I am about to order one of these, thanks bigtoe |

| It is not a fault but more of a "problem"...the standard sink has one of these thick pink pads on it so some contact is there...just not as good as it should be. |

| My GF3 is exactly like that, I just never got around to messing with it because I don't overclock much. |

| With the guys at Annand doing so well I thought 380 on the core would be easy..but with the very poor stock cooling it was hard to run 340 which is only 15mhz over default. Also the back of the card was very hot...a lot hotter than I thought it should be. |

| It is only glued on but to remove it may damage the Gpu.Without the ring there would be no problem but I can see why they have fitted it as it does protect the core just like a shim does on an Athlon...the only problem is it is a few thous to thick. |
