Windows 7 Available October 22; Pricing Hinted At

It's official -- or at least semi-official. Windows 7 will be available for sale as of October 22, a Microsoft spokesperson told InternetNews.com.

It's a Date: Windows 7 Available on October 22 - InternetNews.com

If the leaked memo proves true, Windows 7 won't be the price-gouging monster many have feared.... Best Buy will offer Windows 7 for pre-sale for 16 days, from June 26 through July 11, at incredible discount prices. Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade package will run for just $49.99 and Windows 7 Professional upgrade package for $99.99. The Windows 7 upgrades are only available to Vista owners. Windows XP users have to buy the new version of the OS.

"There isn't a computer being sold today that can't run Windows 7, so it's not the issue it was three years ago"

What if it doesn't run on Skully's machine

I hope I can buy the upgrade version like I did Vista and do the workaround (install twice without having a previos OS installed).

Also where's Windows 7 Ultimate?? I thought there was one. If not what is the best to get.... Home Premium?

My next upgrade will be easy, all my hardware will have a 7 in it.

Is the June pre release only for Vista upgrades or will there be new Win7 available to XP users?

Upgrades will only be good for Vista. No direct upgrade from XP.

The early release is to OEM system builders.

It will be out there. I am guessing that it just not part of the pre-sale. MS probably figures the people who want ultimate will pay more for it. I have Win7 RC installed and it is the ultimate version.

WTH is wrong with MS. If they really want to get rid of XP, they should offer an upgrade path. Punks!

I believe there is one. This special sale is a bone to those who bought Vista. As close to an apology as they will get. I am sure there will be an Xp upgrade price, just a higher one.

Re: Windows 7 Available October 22; Pricing Hinted At

Forgive the dumb questions but is W7 suppose to run on 3yr old computers which puts it at when Vista came out? I am curious to how W7 was dumbed down to run a less powerful computers. Also the time it took to make W7 is fishy. Seems the whole thing is less capable than Vista. People are so misinformed about Vista from hearsay I beleive they will take anything that arrives next be it a turd. They are hailing W7 without even using it which is worse than bad mouthing a product you haven't seen. Please explain the hype and hysteria over this product coming out. I bet not many can.

Re: Windows 7 Available October 22; Pricing Hinted At

Well----I don't care what the MS boys say----or even all these columnists who claim that there are a Bezillion new lines of code in Windows 7...

Bottom line is that Windows 7 is a tuned up Vista.....

The interface and terminology (besides the new taskbar gizmos) is EXACTLY the same....

if you use Vista now on a daily basis you will have all of 5 minutes adjusting to Windows 7.

But-----I will say this----MS HAS given serious attention to tuning Windows 7 to run better and on lesser hardware.

And here's how I believe they have done it....and this is my theory and presented using only a comparison between my little netbook running Win7 and my Desktop running Vista SP2----so I could be wrong....

It's the services baby....

Windows 7 starts and uses less services than the "start everything but the kitchen sink" approach used in Vista.

It seems to sense what services are required and only starts those----much more of a "manual" startup approach than almost everything on automatic.

My little netbook has about 45 services running whilst my desktop has about 85.

Plus MS has removed a lot of the little additional modules that were available in Win 7.......you can still get them if you need them---but you'll have to download them.....ie...Moviemaker.

All this combined with much better tuning of the Vista base of services after 3 years of patches and 2 service packs.....

bottom line is----Vista has gotten much faster and is a much better utilizer of resources after 3 years of tuning it up....

Soooooo-----MS is going to make a FORTUNE on Windows 7 because it IS Vista-----at the same time-----MS is going to make a FORTUNE on Windows 7 because it ISN'T Vista!!!!

How's that for "muddy logic"?

John, I agree with you. I feel that MS did not listen to their customers. The customers did not want those extra services but we may still pay for those services in Win 7, like it or not.
