Windows 7 promotion: $30 for students

Microsoft is offering college students Windows 7 for $29.99...
Interestingly, Microsoft also has something to say about upgrading from previous versions:

"To upgrade easily from Windows Vista, you should upgrade to the same version you currently have in Windows 7. For example, if you’re moving from Windows Vista Home Premium with 32-bit software, it would be easiest to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium with 32-bit software"...

“Upgrading a PC with Windows XP to Windows 7 is an involved process. If you’re at all uncomfortable with it, please consider having the upgrade done by a local PC or electronics retailer.”

Well, I'm a grad student and ordered. Within 5 minutes of getting confirmation of my order, I got another email saying that the order was cancelled. No reason given. Will try again after release. But a smoking deal at $30 (plus $13 if you want them to send a physical disc).

Has anybody ever got the final deal on using a upgrade version of W7 to XP? I know its a fresh install, but do you have to have xp on the HD or can you use a fresh HD and install W7 then just insert your XP disc during the install to verify its legal?

A good deal for sure, but I was able to get Office Enterprise through work for only $9.99

Home use program

Now I just need to find a deal on Windows 7 since I missed the boat on the pre-order pricing...

I would guess OpenOffice has it's biggest following in that age group.
